Master Key question 2000 LC

OK, I'm stumped on this and to make things worse it's a little bit time sensitive. I am very close to closing a deal on a 2000 model landcruiser with only 40,000 miles that is in phenominal condition. BUT! The only key it comes with is a non-remote key. I have called around to a couple dealers and getting a remote key and having it programmed seems to run about $250-$300.

My concern stems from reading on another forum that if I don't have an original "master" key I have to replace some extremely expensive computer things before I can have a new key made. Any truth to this? I've asked the dealers but can't seem to get a straight answer. I want this truck badly but am afraid that a good deal could turn into a nightmare over this key issue. yes, that is correct. you will need to replace the computer, costing well over $1000 IIRC. i would make the seller buy a master key and have it programmed before hand as a condition of the sale.

Thanks for the fast reply! I was afraid of that. I priced the ECM and it looks like it's running $1700 installed at my local dealer. I think I'll pass on this cruiser as that makes a good deal not so good.

Toyota should do the ECM for labor and pay for the parts. They will do this one time per vin #. Research the past threads about this topic as their are extensive posts regarding this.

The master key doesn't necessarily have to have the remote buttons on it. My cruiser only came with one key, which didn't have the remote. I took it to the dealer and they were able to get me keys with remotes and program them for it using the key I had.

Test for Master Key

On my 98 LC the test for the master key is:

1. Before inserting the key, the car ikon below the radio should be blinking.
2. Insert the key.
3. If the car ikon goes out immediatly, you have a master key.
4. If the car ikon light up solid for about a second you have a valet key.

You can program new keys with the master, but not with the valet key.

Check for locksmiths in your area, many can cut and program a duplicate key for about a fourth of the cost of the dealer.

Does it work it all the locks? Including glove box? if so it's a master..

As long as it is a master key it is easy to buy a remote key on the net and program the remote.....

Thanks for the comments guys! I appreciate it. Looks like I have a deal again, with closing contingent on the sellers furnishing a factory master key with integrated remote. Wish me luck! If this closes it will be my first LC. My previous Toyota experience was a 1997 Toyota 4runner which I loved to death. I'm looking forward to more room and comfort and 4x4 ability though.
