Hi guys,

I'm looking for some real time help on the potential purchase of a 1983 BJ42. The owner says that it has 46,000 original k's and the body look mint from the picture. For those that don't know it's a 5spd with power steering and front power disk brakes.

I'm trying to find out if the body is original or a restore job. Either way I'm going to check it out, but it's 1.5 hour drive away. So I'd like to know what the going rice is before I bite. Plus the wife might have a heart attack ;)

Here's the pic.

Thanks,
Alex

that depends ona few things. Assuming it is really mint and that low milage, and the seller knows what he has, it is worth a lot. On ebay such a truck could go up to the 20s ($US that is). In the real world, more like 12 to 15k.
You could get lucky if the owner does not really know.
If it is restored (welded or new tub) but mint, you are probably looking in the range of 8 to 10 k.
If it has hideen flaws and rust, the value drops out of the bottom.
just my opinion from following sales on the web...

I would go higher even if fixed Jan. If it is origional, it may well have hidden rust. If it has be tubbed correctly, then it's value is through the roof. 1983/84 are rare as hens teeth, and finding one that is all there and has been done, or is all there and does not need to be done places this vehicle in collector status. Without seeing it and inspecting it, it is hard to tell. If it is as he says...and as clean...high teens, low twentys...

But then I am totally biased, as I will have a clean 1981 BJ42 for sale in a few months :D

For reference, I paid $10k CAD for mine and it was far from mint but is in great shape. 250k kms, 1st gen Aqualu tub, bib, buttugly fenders and a 5 year old repaint with Sikkens so it looked good. Finding more little issues (rust, fluid leaks) as I go along that I didn't catch at purchase because I was a 40 series and diesel newb and definitely did an impulse buy because I wanted one with the Alu tub already done. Interior etc. was/is fantastic, unmolested, mechanically it has been 100% sound and performs great and there's nothing that can't be fixed. I should say that I think I paid a little too much but again the newb and impulse factors cost me. HTH

Keep us posted--I'm always curious what these go for (for obvious reasons ;) ).

I'm in Toronto if you need any help with this one. I notice it is a 905 area code.

I'm away this weekend, but contact me if you want me to give you hand scoping this one out. 416-458-7266

You should be able to tell if it is a resto, at least both of us checking it out should be able to.

FYI - I have no need for any more cruisers (I'm sitting at 8 right now) so you don't need to worry about me taking this one out from under you.

Cheers,

Adam

Saw it in autotrater.ca, - Ontario, that color is not original by the pic, that affects the value - otherwhise a good deal IMOHO.

Good luck

Michel.

83 BJ42 in resto mode but could sell it as it is the $ quoted in the thread are market indicators...

Heh heh heh - I AM Kreskin! :D

Pending a closer look, I'd snap that thing up in a heartbeat. Mike Taylor was asking $15k USD for his 84 with like 170k kms and plenty of rust issues on the tub and windshield frame. Ebay trucks with full resto go upwards of $20k USD and I had a seller email me about a Raddcruiser restored truck (blue, in San Diego) for $26k USD.

Makes me cry a little and wish I had waited another 9 months but oh well can't predict the future...

Aamiggia--if you've never driven one, I have to also say that the 40 series trucks are just a blast. I have my top off right now and it's so much fun to take to the beach or into the mountains or river. Organic air conditioning as Cheech and Chong would say. After owning a 60, the 40s are just so much more versatile and customizable... You may never drive that LX450 again.

Ahhh...shades of a past listing for sale eh?

https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=11168

I have right of 1st refusal should he sell. It sold local for under $15,000cdn, which was a very good deal imho, and so cheap simply for the right of refusal, and I knew it was going to a Cruiser lover. It did have rust, however was all there, and fully salvagable for anyone who know how to work metal (I don't). He is now the 3rd owner.

Look that one over very carefully Alex...shiney scares me, unless the owner has pics of the process all along.

gb

ya it scares me too. there is alot of metal on a cruiser body to rust with 2,, thick body panels, a little bondo over top and a quick sand and paint can make a 2000 dollar cruiser look like a 10000 one

is dis da one?
909131.jpg.fpx

still it is a land cruiser, they way I look at it, a newer caviler is like almost 20000 and they are a crappy car, how can you even compare that to a Land Cruiser, a toyota tough truck?

Just sold my 1984 BJ42 to a guy on the east coast US, it went for around that kind of money.

Body had some rust, nothing to bad. Frame was surface only rust and the drivetrain was very good 190 klicks and the strongest running BJ42 I have ever owned out of 9.

Needed small things like seals, but was my dailey driver which netted me around 30MPG dailey highway and city combined.

Damn good rig, would of been more fun to drive with parabolics and turbo added.

OK somebody bought it yesterday... I was suppose to go look at it today but the owner emailed me and said it was sold... HOT ITEM... Thank god I already own one.. but just not in as nice shape. So who is the new owner??

Hey Guys,

I didn't think it would last long. I had my chance to pick it up on Thursday, but something about it turned me off.

The guy said it was just painted. Used vehicles that have just been painted are of no iterest to me. I've been burned before  "Front fenders are new from Toyota, doors and body are pretty good. did weld new pices at rear of tub. Brakes , wheel cyl. new, Calipers rebuilt". I think the shinny new paint and bondo was covering up the rust.

It's probably fair priced at $10k, but since it's not a 7x series I was only luke warm to it. If it was all original and in great shape, I'd be all over it.

Thanks for the info and advice. I really like how everyone is willing to offer help especially Adam (MadManCruiser).

Cheers, until next time. Hopefull I find a near mint BJ70.
