3rd party buy last year......i changed out all liquids and tranny has been fine. Truck in excellent condition... Just that annoying manifold tic.tic.tic.

Hi All,

I've been lurking for years and popping up now and then on LCOOL. I've been in seclusion since summer '12 trying to recover from losing my 97FZJ dream truck @200,000 miles. Had everything you could think of... sniff :-(

Anyway, was reading the 2000 A343F thread when I saw the above quote, reminding me of the ticking from my new-to-me 2000LC 80k miles, build 12/99, bought august 2012.

Happens on acceleration but not always; a steady, rapid ticktickticktick...

Any ideas? Is it a problem and if so, a fix?

Thanks!

2000 UZJ100, pretty stock right now, except for K&N Intake Kit.
1992 V6 4Runner 202k miles, 5speed, lift, 285s, 16" FZJ wheels.

Search for exhaust leak, known problem, not a huge issue, fixed with one of the two new manufacturers of headers now on the market.
Thank you.

I've been looking at those headers lately, as I'm focusing first on performance with this truck.

It's a common issue with the 2000's and earlier years. The exhaust manifolds would crack at the flange near the block. Unfortunately the only thing you can do to fix the ticking is replacing them. Some have tried welding with no success. Headers are a great improvement, they are affordable to most, however the labor and cost to install is what prices me out of the game right now.

Thanks for the extra info.

Is it not a warranty or recall issue? Has Toyota addressed it and/or aware of it?

Can

Can

Toyota issued a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin). From my understanding a TSB is when there is an issue that needs addressing, but not enough of them to issue a recall. Either that or Toyota didn't want to pay out of pocket $1,800 per 100 that had cracked manifolds. I can tell what year a 100 is when it drives by...lol

I just read all about the ticking/cracked manifold issue - on the 7 pages on this thread in the FAQs...

Thanks for humoring me ;-)

I'll look there first next time.

Don't worry, everybody does it the first few times

TSB's state procedures for a common problem but the manufacture is not usually responsible nor required to fix outside the warranty unless it is a safety issue.

Recalls are usually safety related (I.e. stuck accelerator). Cracked manifolds don't pose any safety risks.

What about carbon monoxide issues getting into the cabin? There is a reason the exhaust pipe exits the rear. I am a service manager at a toyota dealer and had to change the manifolds on mine. I bet if enough owners complained they could have issued a recall. We just don't whine as much as the prius type of people.

Good point but I think if it was going to happen, it would've happened already. Lots of Tundra owners had cracked manifolds too. The main problem was with the 98-02 years, which are already 11-14 years old now.
