Ok, so I was originally going to go with a non-usa distributor in my 74 fj40. They are friggin expensive! I am considering an electronic ignition conversion, but parts are hard to find and there's a good chance I'll end up with worn out junk and a distributor that has expensive replacement parts.

Does anyone run the mallory dual breaker distrtibutor p/n 2764101? I found one on e-bay for $99 dollars. Could I run my stock coil with it? How much are new coils ? I would like to stay Toyota, but the mallory unit is cheaper, has vacuum advance and doesn't permanently change anything anyway. Are these distributors any good?

The non-USA distributors aren't that expensive (compare to a DUI HEI). you could try finding a E-69 dist (same thing IIRC). You may want to consider getting one of the 79+ electronic distributors. OR you could modify a GM HEI distributor to work with you applications.

If there is nothing wrong with your current setup, why change? I have run the Non-USA dist for a few years with points. I have been rather happy with it.

I saw three later model electronic dists on ebay this AM.
Or you can do the petronix breaker less conversion. That will run you about $70.
Dual points are twice the pain as single. Yes you can run a stock coil with it, they run about $20+.

The reason I want to change my setup is it has the vacuum retard distributor and it's got worn out bushings. The electronic distributors are easy enough to find, it's just the ignitor and coil that are hard. Plus, by the time I get all that stuff it would have cost the same as a new non-usa and I would have old parts. The mallory unit is much cheaper and it's a new distributor, but I am wondering if it's any good.

you can get a used oem dizzy (any year) for 100$ at cruiserparts.net. Just add a pertronix kit ( 70$ ) if you want to remove the old points setup.

you can also have a complete used electronic ignition for 200 $ at cruiserparts.net

I've been running the mallory unilite breakerless dizzy w/optical pickup for uears, no prob. It came on the truck. Make sure you swap a toyota drive gear on there or you'll eat your camshaft.

I found a complete setup from Steven at Extreme Bends in BC Canada for $300CDN That works out about the same as cruiserparts.net when you factor the exchange and shipping in. cruiserparts is a great site though, thanks Froggy  I didn't know about that one.

Extreme Bends has alot of cruiser parts! Plus they do aluminum tubs, steel body panels and many other bolt ons. I'm pretty surprised there is a place like that up here, I guess we've got alot of cruiserheads in BC. REPRESENT! :D

I have a mallory single point mechanical advance distributor on my 79. Was on the truck when I bought it. Works fine. A buddy had a dual point on a big block ford years ago, seems he was always under the hood playing with until he bought the kit to swap it to electronic.

It sounds like dual points would be a PITA. I have no problems with points, but getting two sets to synchronize might be tricky .Probably involves a test light and alot of mucking around compared to single points.

I'm a little aprehensive about switching to electronic ignition. I know Toyota stuff is good and everything, but if your ignitor goes bad in the middle of nowhere you can't do much short of carrying a spare, which is expensive and would probably be no good after bouncing around in a glove box for a few years.

I run a Mallory Magnetic Breakerless dizzy-no points. Good and bad, set it and forget it-until it fails. Mine fortunately failed close to home after it performed flawlessly for about 3 years. Had a difficult time figuring out what was wrong-in the end it was a $60-70 part of the dizzy. Swapped it and it has worked great for about two more years. I have been thinking of upgrading next to a non-USA OEM dizzy but am still doing research on the benefits, comparisons, etc. So take your pick...
