Hello! Wondering if I’m crazy. I was looking to replace front brakes and rotors on my ‘17 GX that just turned over 40k miles. I just bought this car about 6 months ago.
Long story short, upon taking apart my caliper, I discovered that the caliper appears to be split down the middle where it was machined in the factory. As soon as I removed the caliper pin bolts, it started puking brake fluid. Pictures included.

Has anyone else ever seen this? It’s Sunday so I can’t call my dealership, but do you think this will be covered under warranty?

I've been die hard Toyota and Lexus for years. To me, this is very disappointing.

It looks like it was made that way. I think you removed bolts that were not necessary to replace the pads. Your pads look fine, lots of miles left. Rotors look fine also. You could have just done a visual with a flashlight and left them alone. There is probably an o ring or rubber seal between the two halfs. It might just bolt back together and not leak. You may need a new seal.

Bolt them back together , bleed the system and see if they leak. Look up the right torque for the bolt.

Rule one of car mechanics, if it's not broke, don't fix it.

Did you remove the 4 bolt circled in red? If you do then yes it would split.

Yep. It’s my mistake. I took out those 4 bolts as I would have most other brake jobs. Sorry to be dramatic above, but I’ve not come across calipers like this. I’ve owned an FJ, Tacoma, and replaced brakes on a 4Runner. This was obviously a different experience.

thanks for your feedback!

is it safe just to tighten these bolts back up and go, or are there seals on the inside that I should replace since I’ve erroneously opened it up?

Also, I was starting to get some warping in the front rotors. I live in the mountains in CO and am doing a lot of ascent and descent. For example, last weekend so I gained and dropped over 15,000 ft of elevation in one weekend in this car. I am upgrading the front rotors to EBC rotors to see if they are any more resilient than stock rotors.

Yes there are seals.

Yes you will need new ones after disturbing them.

I doubt damaging your truck gets covered under warranty.

Learn to engine brake in Colorado if you want to save brakes and rotors, but they’re so cheap to replace I don’t know why you’d bother.
