Below is an issue I had while on vacation. I had sudden loss of power while on highway. With the help of the forum I was able to get up and running and make it home.

A summary of the results are HERE

-------------------------------------------------

Broke down 40 minutes north of Asheville trying to get a tow now. Sudden loss of power with the following codes P0300, P0301, P0304, P0306, P0308, P0101.

Anyone have any recommended shops or advice?

Multiple coils throwing errors, and MAF sensor code. I'd check the cam sensor harness and other wiring on the driver's side of the MAF (front of the intake). Make sure nothing is cut, or came unplugged. Have you had any service done lately that could have broken/dislodged something?

I'm not of much help, but post up in the ONSC clubhouse. There may be someone close to you that can lend a hand.

I just cleaned the MAF and was able to get it started. Seems to be running ok now trying to get to asheville. Does that mean the MAF is going bad? Checked the wiring and didnt see anything.

Either going bad or just dirty. If too dirty and reading wrong could cause a lean or rich condition and throw misfire codes and cause the engine to stall. If its running fine now that's likely the problem. Don't think they go bad, just get dirty or fail outright.
Cleaned the MAF 2 weeks ago but it's been smelling rich before and after the cleaning. Gonna pick up a new one if I can just to be safe.

Fred Anderson Toyota is a good dealership off I26 just outside of Asheville.

Think that's Jim Barkley dealership. They have helped out upstate cruiser members before and donate regularly.

Mostlys gets mixed reviews but i think good group. Used to be great but i got blasted by locals for referring lol.

Cant help at the moment with codes but def seems like a wiring short vs. an actual misfire on several diff cylinders. Plus im an 80s guy :)

Not anymore ;) Jim retired and Fred bought them.

I figured you might know someone in the area that could help.

So before and after cleaning MAF you disconnect battery for 30 min. This resets ecm to re-learn new values.

Thanks everyone.

I was able to make into Asheville after cleaning the MAF. I stopped at Autozone and picked up another MAF. I made it another 5 miles with old MAF and when I went to park starting running rough.

Swapped in new MAF and made it another 5 miles with no problems. Hoping this was issue but not 100% convinced.

I still have about 10 hours of driving to make my way home. Before I leave Asheville tomorrow any suggestions on additional parts I may want to pick up?

Hey @frogers935, I had similar issues on my 98 100 series last week. I discovered a few issues when the same codes popped up last week on mine.

1st issue I found was the spark plugs and coils on the passenger side were covered in oil from failed spark plug tube gaskets in the valve covers. Pull your coils and give them a look to see if they are dry.

2nd Issue was a failed lower intake gasket. My intake gasket cracked between cylinders 1&3. I was pulling extra air and causing the Air/Fuel mixture to be off. Spray a little carb cleaner/starting fluid around the intake and the engine will tell you if you have a leak.

Im about 3 hours east of Asheville. Located in Chapel Hill. If you make it by this way Ill be glad to lend you a hand. I have extra spark plugs and coils on hand.

I documented my repair in Weekend at Bernies starts at post 49

Made it to Boone, NC with a stop in TN. LX ran fine until pulled onto a side road and it lost power again. Below is a summary. I am supposed to be in Boone until Monday. I will troubleshoot in the morning but at this point I may need to look into a uhaul to get it back home. Suggestions welcomed.

- lost power while on highway
- clean MAF and discconect battery
- runs okay, stop and get new MAF
- loss power pulling into parking lot
- installed new MAF
- runs fine from Asheville to TN to Boone with a 6 hr stop in between
- runs fine for 2 hrs
- lost power when turning onto side street
- disconnected battery for 5min, runs for a mile
- lost power
- spray clean MAF and discconect battery
- drives okay for 5 miles
- I am now Parked and looking at options

Do you have the FSM? I would read through the diagnostic steps for these codes.

I read through some of them, but did want to point out that the P0300 (random misfire) code likely means all of the misfires were simultaneous and tied to the same event or condition. The troubleshooting says to check wire harness, connectors and vacuum hoses. The next step is PCV valve. Have you checked your PCV? Stuck PCV can cause misfire at or near idle which may coincide with your symptoms when you slow down. You can do the shake test or try cleaning it. Also check condition of hose which could be a leak.

The next two steps when there are more than two cylinders with misfire:

I would not suspect timing to be intermittent issue, but a failing fuel pump or pressure regulator may.

Going to check PCV now. Planning to try and drive it to Toyota dealership this morning, hopefully they can work on it if it's a fuel issue.

Check PCV valve and it seems okay. No way for me to check fuel issues , going to try and drive it in.

Any insight to why disconnecting battery/cleaning MAF would clear the ossis at least for a little while?
