If he buys a rig with a 350 and parts it out he could potentially get the engine and install essentially for free. Wally did a great job on mine and Kina can do it well.

It really comes down to how much $$$ does Randy want to spend....

If I remember, BigRedFJ40 was in the 180HP range. I have driven that truck. Pretty snotty for a 2F. He had James Asti build it eons ago.

Believe it or not, one of the fastest non v8 cruisers I have driven was a stock $500 truck I bought with a reman engine with a header and a holley. That thing was pretty quick in a straight line. Useless off road with the unmodified holley, however.

Are you still planning to tow with it? If so, butchering it with a v8 is really your only choice. You can buy a whole v8 truck with an sm465 for under a grand on craigslist if you look hard enough. Part the rest to make back your cash.

I passed on a 88k full size tbi Blazer with a 350, 700R4 and a 7' plow for $400 last year. My FIL bought it, and has been plowing with it since. If I had the coin at the time, that would be in my rig.

As Dan said, my motor is built well. I had James Asti build it for me due to the fact that I didn't have the time at that point and it was easier to write a check.....

It is bored .040 over, crank turned .010 under, Clifford RV grind cam, ported polished head with 3 angle valve job. Head was milled to min. tolerance for maximum compression. High pressure, high volume oil pump...... blah blah blah...... Balanced and blueprinted. It's been a long time but, if memory serves correct the #'s were around 200 hp and 280 ft./lbs torque. It is an animal in the woods and loves pulling high RPM's with ease down the road. I think compression is around 9.5 or so, runs only on super or better (she LOVES avgas.....110 octaine:grinpimp:).

Was it worth the money? I think so but, I love seeing all Toyoda under the hood:D.

That sounds like a pretty nasty 2F and must be fun to drive. How many miles do you have on the motor and what mileage are you getting? Any issues to speak of?

How much are these alleged "2F" engines???

ya know Randy wallys engine place has built quite a few engines for him...you might drop wally a line and see what he and the engine guys can do for ya.

from what i remember the prices werent too far out of line for the millwork stuff

Good thinking Johnny and I've been talking to Wally for some time about the engine shop he uses. Good options and prices there for sure.

x2. JimC - maybe you should ship said t-shirt with your engines as a reminder of your disclaimer.

Manafre just responded saying that their hi-po 2Fs have a performance increase of 11% with the forged 9.0:1 pistons. No dyno results though.

Randy,

I am ashamed to say that I have put less than 20k on the truck since dropping in the engine. I have had 0 problems with it other than stupid carb issues (Weber). I get around 17mpg or so if I am nice to it..... If I am driving like an a$$hole, it can watch the fuel gauge drop.

I really enjoy my setup. I recently drove a bone stock 1970 and couldn't believe the difference in power and response. I like mine better:grinpimp:

If you want, when the snows melt away, you can take my rig for a ride and see what you think.

Chris

Chris-You have a wally tub and good paint. Let him drive it now. :)

Now for my .02 if you are interested.

What about a stock unrebuilt 2F for now (bolt in swap), at a blistering 140HP, and snag the 350, rebuild it yourself with a stock 225 HP, toss it in when ready. Now you know boh engines, and what you like/ dislike about them.

The stock motor is a reversable swap. The 350 is a commitment.

You know 2F motors inside and out, and have punished them more than most ever will. I have seen it. This truck is not a wheeler, nor a stock truck. It is a street modified. Go for the small block, it will be 3-5K done well. Ask Dave (jr) or Jimbo if they would go back. It is easy to find people who have not had both to give opinions (myself included). I would listen to people who have done both, and know both.

If you think you will ever tow with it, you KNOW that is not advisable with the 2F. And upgrade the brakes.

I would still take the opportunity to smack the crap out of BigRedfj40's- it is a kick to drive. :)

Good ideas Dan and thanks for weighing in. I'm familiar enough with a stockish 2F to have an idea of what it would be like in the troopy - Slowwww. If I needed it to be running I could install the 2H coming from OZ in a month or so, but there's no pressure to get it back on the road quickly and I'd rather do one swap and be done with it. It's in pieces now so it makes sense to continue disassembling.

The main reason for this thread was to find out what the limits of the 2F are and so see what the MAF 2F was capable of. It seems like their description of the hi-po 2F is exagerated. 200hp & 280tq seems to be the limit and the costs would equal or exceed a V8, depending on build specs. That said, it would still be rather slow in a loaded troopy pulling an M101.

I've talked to Wally and Junior about V8's, so much so that they're probably tired of the discussion . The V8 seems to make the most sense at this point. The input in this thread has been helpful...thanks all.

Chris - Count me in on a test :steer: of your fine rig. I promise to not smack it around as Dan suggests. :grinpimp:

way back when when I had a fj40 I switched it over to a Mallory ignition system and saw my mileage go up but the over all performance was night and day better. I have no numbers just what I remember as the sensation of adding a turbo to my fj40. as far as engines go i tend to be a purest and keep it toyota not sure if the lv will see an ignition upgrade or not but there are guys running different ones in the fj62's and getting 17-18mpg up from 14-15mpg. might be worth picking up one and running it on your fj40 to see how you like it.
FedEx just arrived the lv now has tunes:)
