A V8 makes sense from a cost & power point of view, but the butchering factor looms heavy.
If I remember, BigRedFJ40 was in the 180HP range. I have driven that truck. Pretty snotty for a 2F. He had James Asti build it eons ago.
Believe it or not, one of the fastest non v8 cruisers I have driven was a stock $500 truck I bought with a reman engine with a header and a holley. That thing was pretty quick in a straight line. Useless off road with the unmodified holley, however.
Are you still planning to tow with it? If so, butchering it with a v8 is really your only choice. You can buy a whole v8 truck with an sm465 for under a grand on craigslist if you look hard enough. Part the rest to make back your cash.
I passed on a 88k full size tbi Blazer with a 350, 700R4 and a 7' plow for $400 last year. My FIL bought it, and has been plowing with it since. If I had the coin at the time, that would be in my rig.
That sounds like a pretty nasty 2F and must be fun to drive. How many miles do you have on the motor and what mileage are you getting? Any issues to speak of?As Dan said, my motor is built well. I had James Asti build it for me due to the fact that I didn't have the time at that point and it was easier to write a check.....
It is bored .040 over, crank turned .010 under, Clifford RV grind cam, ported polished head with 3 angle valve job. Head was milled to min. tolerance for maximum compression. High pressure, high volume oil pump...... blah blah blah...... Balanced and blueprinted. It's been a long time but, if memory serves correct the #'s were around 200 hp and 280 ft./lbs torque. It is an animal in the woods and loves pulling high RPM's with ease down the road. I think compression is around 9.5 or so, runs only on super or better (she LOVES avgas.....110 octaine).
Was it worth the money? I think so but, I love seeing all Toyoda under the hood.
How much are these alleged "2F" engines???
x2. JimC - maybe you should ship said t-shirt with your engines as a reminder of your disclaimer.
My offer for the 350 still stands.

for what ????? a boat anchor?![]()
You'll keep quiet, if you want the frame that the 350 is sitting in..
Good ideas Dan and thanks for weighing in. I'm familiar enough with a stockish 2F to have an idea of what it would be like in the troopy - Slowwww. If I needed it to be running I could install the 2H coming from OZ in a month or so, but there's no pressure to get it back on the road quickly and I'd rather do one swap and be done with it. It's in pieces now so it makes sense to continue disassembling.Chris-You have a wally tub and good paint. Let him drive it now.![]()
Now for my .02 if you are interested.
What about a stock unrebuilt 2F for now (bolt in swap), at a blistering 140HP, and snag the 350, rebuild it yourself with a stock 225 HP, toss it in when ready. Now you know boh engines, and what you like/ dislike about them.
The stock motor is a reversable swap. The 350 is a commitment.
You know 2F motors inside and out, and have punished them more than most ever will. I have seen it. This truck is not a wheeler, nor a stock truck. It is a street modified. Go for the small block, it will be 3-5K done well. Ask Dave (jr) or Jimbo if they would go back. It is easy to find people who have not had both to give opinions (myself included). I would listen to people who have done both, and know both.
If you think you will ever tow with it, you KNOW that is not advisable with the 2F. And upgrade the brakes.
I would still take the opportunity to smack the crap out of BigRedfj40's- it is a kick to drive.![]()
