Machine Shop or Rebuilder in San Diego

Kenyon Machine in Pacific Beach has done two of my 2F's and others for sure that I have seen. They know their way around them...

Issue: pistons are hard to source(75-80 2F's), so might be a time consuming process, since you dont want to order the wrong ones. Let them tear it down and tell you what to order...

?

Im just curious what the price was approximately for a rebuild?

They have hooked me up in the past rebuilds and I am lucky enough to get to actually help out on some of the work if I have free time, so my price is not the average joe's price. I also disasemble/assemble the engine myself so that saves a bunch of labor on the ends. I can tell you are comfortable taking the engine down and re-assembling it will save you an easy $300+

I would ball park a long block rebuild at $1500(self assembly and you supply cam/lifters). no carb/ intake accessories included...

redoing the head(gets expensive if its beat) is the largest +/- $ variable. I have had heads that cost less than $100 to over $400 to get up to speed.)

Pistons are hard to find for 75-80 2F's... not impossible, but there are options out there other than expensive federal mogul(and like brands that are over $50 each without rings) Ebay is your friend...

Zach, you aren't looking for a rebuild on that new rig already, are you?

Brett, that is good to know "just in case". Are they recommended for head jobs too?

Maybe we should get a local FAQ/sticky going for respected San Diego area resources for Cruiser work/projects?

Don't forget West Coast Cruisers in Ramona- Michael is a great guy and a supporting vendor here on Mud.

I had good luck with MIT in El Cajon for driveline work on the FJ40.

I have also used Auto Air Marine Electric successfully for the old FJ40 V-8 conversion, guages, and auto trans electrical and wiring issues.

Ed Hansons Muffler Services in spring Valley does excellent exhaust work. Had two trucks done by them and they have done very nice work.

Wholesale Automotive Machine is another good engine rebuilder. I will almost guarantee they will be more expensive than Kenyon, but its an option...

As for paint work, its tough in San Diego, at least when I went to get my FJ40 painted. not too many shops out there that like restoration work. Most just like buying new panels, bolting them on and color matching. To the point that I got frustrated trying to find someone to do it, and painted my old Fj40 myself.

No sir runs fine I just was curious.

I can second or third kenyon's. Did great work on the machining for my 3vz rebuild, put up with my questions, good guys.

Getting ready to do a clutch job on the 40, and am going to have the flywheel machined. Any North County machine shops recommended for this? I know Kenyon is well respected by all here, but just wondering if I can take the flywheel to a local shop closer in proximity if it is fairly straightforward?

I will add to the FAQ thread we started later so we keep that thread clean and organized.

Thanks.
