I know this is for the AU and not a 700OT, but this is probably the best review of an Overtrail I have seen. This dude sends it in that last hill/crest that looks genuinely gnarly. Trust me, by now I have probably watched an unhealthy number of 700OT reviews in YT. I would argue I have seen them all, except for the ones made by mommies that will take their kids to soccer practice (don't even know why you would make such a review for an OT anyway).

Definitely one of the better real world tests. Still, he stacks rocks (weak, but I get that it's not his rig) and makes it up without any drama.

That hill climb is similar (but considerably less technical) than the hard line at a popular trail out here in the Denver area, Slaughterhouse Gulch. The capability of the 700 OT is impressive, no doubt. The chin will get scraped on the harder stuff, but it's just plastic.

The factory tires are like 32.6", and adding true 35s is a game changer in terms of capability.

Yep. It is also great to see some sort of comparison with the LC300 GR sport - what we actually should have gotten here Stateside. I promised I wouldn't rant anymore

Nobody would have bought the GR Sport 300 Series. It would cost $90k+, so I understand why Toyota did what they did.

A “Land Cruiser” 250 for more like $60k-$70k has proven to be a good strategy for Toyota, even though it waters down the Land Cruiser brand.

The Lexus LX is a decent Lexus product, outside of being a true off roader, and they know their Lexus demographic values the experience with Lexus enough to drop more money.

I refer to my rig as “The Land Cruiser” all the time and it confuses people, so that’s annoying. I’m like, it’s the only actual Land Cruiser you can buy in the states, and then it’s a whole conversation 😂

It'll prob more close to $100k, since the top end Sequoia is nearing $90k. It doesn't really make sense to have the 300 here just to satisfy the IYKYK crowd.

With that said, when someone ask me what i drive, i tell them i drive a Toyota hybrid

I've devolved into making the following comparison for non-LC nerds:

Land Cruiser 250 = Ranger
GX550 = F150
LX700h = F250 King Ranch

;)

Yeah, I am not convinced at least the GR wouldn't sell. Even if at $100k+. At a minimum, close to all of the OT buyers would flock to that and maybe even some that ended up buying the Prado. Ideally Toyota wouldn't have whored out the name and and would bring the several available trims of the 300 to the US for close to what they are charging the Prados. I agree however, from a financial perspective, it is much better for Toyota to sell Prados for the price they would sell 300s.

When (and if I) get my OT I have no idea what to respond when people ask what car I drive. A lexus? (kinda pretentious), an LX? (what's that?), an LX Overtrail? (come again?), a Land Cruiser? (hummm, isn't that a Toyota?). I think I will have to go with "an LX Overtrail, the only way to get the real LC in the US"... still confusing.🤣

But how many OT owners are there in real world numbers? That’s not very many vehicles for Toyota to bring a whole new model to crash test and do emissions testing just to satisfy a handful of “hardcore” owners. I’m grateful they even offered the Overtrail to the LX lineup at all.

I didn't own the 200 series but out of curiosity for the folks that had. Was there any difference between LC200 and LX 570, aside from badging? Like noise reduction, etc?

You can look at this thread to see the differences and opinions.

100% agree. It was an unexpected toss for sure.

Yep. Better leather, noise reduction from double paned windows, full ACC, AHC (arguably).

Looking back at the MSRP of 2021 models, they were basically priced the same. What was the main reason most people get the 200 over the 570 if the 570 has better quality and luxury?

I think it's a lack of knowledge or faith in the AHC system, the elongated front end, and those horrendous 21" wheels. Also the LC is more understated.

This.

It was a bloated Highlander that could blend into the background a bit better. “Stealth wealth.”

Actually, I am not sure the LC200 sold more than the LX570. I think it was the opposite. People bought more LXs than LCs, but then when it gets to the used car market, people pay more for the Land Cruiser name.

The design also had to do with it. Take me as an example. I would never buy the LXs prior to the current generation. It is tempting because they have more amenities and cost less, but I can't stomach the previous grill. Reason why I bought my 200. Current LX gen, I can tolerate better, but I am only contemplating trading my 200 because of the OT. I would never do it for the regular LX - even the current gen.

Listen, I own a 80 series that is very built and also own the 700OT. I have now taken both around the mountains of Montana hunting and off-roading, and on long highway trips. I went to Panama this year and got to see the LC 300 up close and personal. Based on all this, I have started saying that the Landcruiser is basically an LX. NOT the other way around.

Just this weekend my wife and I took the 80 on an antelope hunt, spent 48 straight hours off road, and we both were wishing we were in the LX, it got brought up multiple times. The bone stock LX can do 95% of what my 80 can do. Can the 80 do better at extreme rock crawling, yes, but The LX is 10x better at everything else. The stock AHC suspension is incredible. If I had to pick, I’m taking the LX over ANY LC all day every day.

My FIL keeps referring to it as a GX. 😑

The stealth part of the LX700h OT is the fact that it’s THE Land Cruiser in the US but only a small number of people in the “IYKYK” crowd have any idea.

Honestly, that makes it pretty cool. Oh, and the 3 lockers and ability to run any trail-that part is ok too.

Yep. Getting more and more satisfied with the LX Overtrail. Took it to the hunting lease this afternoon, roughing it around on washed out roads. Except it wasn't rough. It was smooth, collected, predictable. And then it went 70-80mph back home in serene quiet.

And it towed my boat last week. And did a 1000 mile road trip the week before with my family of five, all of us comfortable and relaxed every step of the way.

My only bones to pick currently are gas mileage (failure to meet expectations), and the third row seat platefo when folded down (I cracked it with my knee yesterday, and it leaves all these holes for things to fall into).

Agreed, I’m seeking an aux tank asap. The range is not ok. Once that’s fixed it’s perfect. I actually like the 3rd row because it makes a perfect sleeping platform for when I hunt in it, no need to buy or build one, throw a mattress on it and it’s level already.

You said it perfectly, you can go straight from off-roading to highway without doing anything. A true Landcruiser to the definition. With the 80 I have to air down to make it comfortable and not rattle a bunch. That’s with a stage 3 dobinson suspension kit on it. With the LX, it’s seamless. No need to air down at all.

I plan to throw an aux tank and a winch on it and leave the rest bone stock. I’m not even going to put bigger tires on it, I love the way it rides and handles off-road too much to change anything at all. If and when I crunch the side steps I’ll throw sliders on. Until then, nothing.

What helps me appreciate the LX, despite its many (let’s be real, MANY) shortcomings is that it’s James Bond as a car. I’ve owned a ridiculous number of cars, and none were quite so convincing with two very different missions.

Specifically, The LX700h OT on 35s is Daniel Craig as James Bond. (The LX600 is Pierce Brosnan, the venerable 80 Series is obviously Sean Connery. The 200 is Timothy Dalton, sorry not sorry).

The LX700h OT is seen cruising around town clean, with tire shine (rocking the tuxedo as a daily driver, date night car, valet out front), and onlookers assume it always wears a tux.

Meanwhile, on the weekends it kicks some serious ass on trails (and get its ass kicked without breaking) whenever asked to do so.

Shows up Monday in a tux again like it never happened, martini in hand.

LOL...Timothy Dalton. To this day I still wonder how did that happen?
No need to air down at all.
Really? That's convenient for sure.

I think I have seen in some of these reviews a guy saying it was pretty flimsy. I wonder if the guy that approved that third row solution is still employed by Toyota/Lexus.
