LX570 trailhead car theft prevention?

I'm attaching a PDF of this subscriber-only article from The Globe and Mail talking about ways to slow down or discourage a car thief. That's where I learned of Sherlock's OBD Protector. You can find it on Amazon. Most reviewers there seem happy with the product but complain about the installation instructions being unclear.

I don't have one myself as my GX470 still relies a physical key...

There was no evidence of anyone trying to seal it after a few hours. If anyone tried, they would've had to bring a shovel at a minimum to get the car out of the unmaintained New Hampshire Class VI road before I find them. (I.e. I wish I had a shovel in the car yesterday.)

Mud on the ground under heavy snow on an uphill slope was tough. It was very easy to get all four wheels in mud holes. Dealing with that was more memorable than hiking itself (serious).

Please don't drive on class 6 NH or class 4 VT roads until the mud season passes. It is a sure fire way to destroy terrain, upset residents, and potentially have access to these places closed. I say this with no malice. I just don't want to lose more access to already limited options in our region.

If someone wants your car, they are going to take it. You can reduce your potential for being a target by not leaving things in sight, not leaving valuables in the vehicle, and not making it worth anyones time to break in. Keep the thief looking for an easy grab moving on to the next easier target. We have a local trailhead where there are constant break ins - very busy lot, near a main paved road, usually smash and grab of contents. Separately, a lot of friends that are serious hikers (one did 100 summits last year) mostly have someone drop them off and pick them up. Another approach might be to buy a cheap %h1^box car and use it for parking in places where you think stuff like that might happen. I just park my car, keep stuff out of sight, and forget about it. If someone wants my car or the contents, they'll find a way to get them.

a real thief would buy one of these just for the key

I'm much more concerned about break ins than theft of the whole car. Lots of stories of lots of break ins at remote trailheads in the western U.S., including here on Mud. Shortage of replacement glass because of so many cars getting broken into, thieves just don't hesitate even to just look for stuff. I left my 100 at my brother's place in northern Idaho, with plans to take it on camping trips. If I do, I'll stick to car-camping, and day hikes only at busy trailheads. Sucks, but good chance of coming back to find windows broken and interior ripped up, I would not be able to enjoy camping.

I doubt that this company's OBD locks all share the same key pattern.

possibly but can't be too many variations in these parts

If you google search, you'll find a lot of Canadian news on theft of Lexus SUVs. By the numbers, RX is most stolen, but Lexus SUVs are equally easy to steal and LX theft is also reported.

(Aichi prefecture is where Toyota factories are.)

If you google you'll find several rather easily, and then go deep search...
i was planning a road trip to Montreal, and they list Toyota Highlanders as the MOST STOLEN vehicle there. Its something to do with the huge demand for them in the middle east, and montreal being an internatonal seaport.

So now i am aso worried about parking my LX570 there. Not much difference between a highlander and an LX imobilizer system. and they are easily defeating the imobilizer in Highlanders, obvsiously.

I do a lot of road tripping and bring "The Club" along, and use it in sketchy parking situations. But a pro is not going to be deterred. Was thinking of adding a 2nd layer of anti theft, but not sure what it will be. there are things that attach between the steering wheel and gas peddle. or steering whee and the seatbelt socket.

Remove a vital fuse from the fusebox is a tried and true method. You can even put a dummy in it's place if you think your thief is also a shadetree mechanic. It's free and will deter anyone who didn't bring their own tow truck.

When leaving my camper unattended anywhere, I wrap a bright orange chain through the wheel spokes and around the axle and secure it with a heavy padlock. It's more of a visual deterrent than anything, but it definitely sends a message. "poor man's Denver boot"
i am kind of amazed at HOW EASILY i can saw thru chains using an angle grinder with a carborundum meta cutting bit in it. even hardened steel, takes like 30 seconds.

Now that we, in this forum, are driving the old models, don’t you think theft will go down?

I would think that thieves are unable to see how we have the pinnacle of the line and are more interested in the shiny, new models.

I would certainly hope so. However, I also think smart people would rather steal a 200 in a good condition than a 300...

aaah so you are the culprit that is spewing this ….

I keep telling people I dont drive a Highlander and no one believes me

I wish people would steal my PoS 200. Then I could upgrade

I leave my car unlocked at home, at my farm, offroad, in ghetto downtown LA

no one takes it.

I keep telling people “please take my highlander” and they keep ignoring me

I spent many years in the homogeneous world of maine/novia scotia/vermont - car theft was the last of my worries….. ranked right after if my unused semen from my heated seat could get a woman pregnant across the street

that is funny.

That's funny. i had an RX350 with 225K miles on it. Never donned on me, but if someone jacked it....it would have been a good thing!

Our RX300 has 290k miles on it. I would be very sad if it was stolen.

My 200 series Highlander? Don't care. Please take it.

yes you DO grow affectionate about it.
but me giving it away to my daughter forced me to buy the LX, and it is soooo much better for road trips.

RX350 is perfect for ONE MAN road trips. Get a partner in the right seat, and it is just too narrow! you are in each other's face the whole time

Interestingly I think the opposite.

Had Lancruisers since the 80s. NEVER in my life would take a RX for free. POS unibody junk.

My elderly mom bought a new 99 RX300> perfect car for the old lady. Cream color, mint condition. Once she passed away, it remained with me.

I slowly started driving it. Wow, kinda liked it. Nice ride, good torque, easy to park. Then left Land Cruiser at home, took RX to Mexico. RX to Canada, and did a 3500 mile road trip.

So much nicer than the LC in all aspects. Endearing.

It is our Prius.

I would be way more concerned with smashed windows.
That was my thought in the case of parking at trailheads. I put 3M security film on the windows mainly for the PhD students in downtown Baltimore and other cities wanting to wash my already spotless windshield. Yeah I'll have smashed windows on the trailhead but maybe the film will be enough of a deterrent that the thieves will move on as it will take relatively more effort to break in.

And yes, I'm aware of the implications of having security film in case of a crash. For me, the decision to add it, boils down to the likelihood of the various scenarios.
