Hello all, I thought I’d take some time to post a solution to a problem that I had with my 2011 LX570. I recently purchased this rig with 200k and found that it had a couple of small issues that really stumped me. One of those issues was my rear tailgate. It would only open after disconnecting the battery. The soft open and close worked fine, but as soon as the upper hatch closed, or pressure was applied to the lower tailgate, it would no longer open. I managed to disassemble the rear gate and find that the system was 100% electric with the rear manual handle activating a switch.

Instead of trying to troubleshoot the actuators, or replace them with new electronic units, I opted to find the appropriate parts from a 200 series Land Cruiser and install them. I have attached pictures of the parts, and part numbers.

Install was very straight forward. I took the old stuff out, abandoned the existing harness, and installed my new manual cables and latches. The lower gate now opens every single time that I pull the leaver! The upper gate functions flawlessly.

I hope this helps someone out in the future. I spent hours digging through posts without any real resolve. I think the total amount spend for both latches and the lock actuator was around $250 with shipping.

I have considered doing this on my 2018 LC (which was the year the LC started having this electric mechanism, too). There have been a few people who have experienced other problems with the electrical mechanism. I don't understand why they would swap out a manual mechanism for an electric one, when the user-facing portion of it (the handle) doesn't change. All it does is create a failure point where one shouldn't have existed. I supposed maybe the electric mechanism was required when they also the power-assisted lift for the hatch, since you don't want that hatch to close when the lower tailgate is open.

I dont get it when the soft open feature is all it does when power close would have been nicer.
But yeah, i think this a bit of a weird choice given my top half tailgate doesnt power open by button. That was added in the LX in 2018.

@GH1291 If its still apart would have been a great time to do the tailgate storage mod!
