My wife and I have a 2004 GX470. My family also has a 2004 LX470.

I don't understand how you guys can be so butthurt about the barn door..

We offroad ours. She is amazing. Comfortable on long road trips as well.

3in lift
285/70 mud tires

We also have a dog that we bring. 75lb belgian malinois.

For a bigger family on a longer road trip, the LX. But for a family of two with a dog and we pack a lot of gear, the GX is perfect.

Just bought a 2004 GX470 with a clean history and 84K miles; colour me happy. Good thread, keep it going as long as the trucks do. Would prefer the 60/40 doors of the 70 Series to the big Landy door that should have reversible hinges like a fridge...can't have it all I guess!

OOOO, it's like covid.
when I see a barn door in a parking lot with some woman loading groceries I have a secret desire to perform some destructive testing.

here's the real barn door thread and the only place where they need to be spoken about. I mean really, there's a whole entire forum for that model. They've been talking about it for ever ten years even- sheesh

The new LX/LC ditched the wonderful split gate for the entire door lift thingy option. That’s the worst mistake the Japs have made since plastic headlights.

AGREED

To chime in on this discussion, I own an '05 GX and '07 LX, both with the vvti, and the GX with KDSS and hill DAC. My wife has always hated large vehicles and the Prado is the perfect blend of three-row space with a small footprint. While they both have the same engine and drivetrain, the GX gets 15mpg vs 12 all day in the LX. Quality of the LX is better with everything being tight and well insulated for it's 16 year old age. However the GX is not far off sitting in between an absolute superb quality of the LX and that of a Toyota product. I find that while admittedly, I assumed I would not enjoy the GX as much as the bigger better LX, in reality they overlap so well that we the GX is definitely the wife's DD and my choice 9/10 times for errand runs, and even the occasionally day trip. The LX has that much more room and incremental improvements in quality, but the GX excels accomplishing 95% of the strengths of the LX with better mpg and acceleration in daily usage. Love them both my household is instead a his (LX) and hers (GX) instead of either or. Hope this helps!!!

Sounds like you’d be even better off with a hybrid rav4. That’s got the same room inside, like triple the MPGs and drives way easier than a GX.

Except it lacks the aftermarket rock sliders, wheels/tires, body on frame, suspension flex, and towing that both of our other cruisers have, not to mention the luxury feel. I like nice things, but we like to use them for their intended purposes as well. Our family of 5’s (soon to be six!) unique demands that each the LX & GX fulfill simply aren’t met by a rav 4, which, while nice for a cute urban family, simply doesn’t cut it for my that gets out in the backcountry to go exploring. My top focus on vehicle purchase is in engineering design, reliability, and quality, of which there is no comparison and thus the rav 4 hybrid is at the completely opposite spectrum compared to that 2uz-fe platform…no offense to the rav 4 owners out there 😂
