I have a leak in my front big muffler on my 1998 LX470 and well dealer wants 500 bux just for the part and i asked around and no one carries any replacement muffler except lexus :( and i dont want to spend 500 bux on just a muffler so i searched the internet and found flowmaster mufflers that can be clamped on i guess. has any one else ever used these? Or if not what else besides the OEM replacement have you guys used? I dont want striaght through pipe or a performance exhaust as this is my wife's truck so quiter the better :)

All of those aftermarket mufflers (flowmaster, borla, etc.) are noisy. I installed an aftermarket 2.25" catback on my old 4runner when it was my wife's dd...it was hidiously loud (despite what the shop told me). We're talking about the sound of a little prop airplane reving up it's engine to takeoff loud. I ended up having to remove all the interior and putting asphalt sound insulation everywhere. At least you can hear the header now and not just exhaust.

well dont we have two mufflers? One small one in teh back and one big one in the front? So if i leave the small one in the back and get the front one repalced with the flowtech will it still be loud?

Being in a similar situation a couple years ago I had a local quality muffler shop install a Magnaflow standard muffler and then after I crushed the resonator he installed a very small glass pack type resonator in the rear. The combination is not quite as quiet as stock but almost. I like it.

I recently had a Borla Cat-back exhaust installed. I like the throaty sound; however, the chrome tip is so large that it does not fit through the trailer hitch opening. I plan to call Borla to see if they can send another section without the large chrome tip. Otherwise, I guess I could go to a muffler shop and see if they can remove the weld and pull the tip. Not sure that is an option.

Good luck

i personally want one without the rear resonator...maybe david borla will custom 1 off our own rear sections!

You need to be mindful of backpressure with this motor...don't know if the resonator adds much or not. I went with a very small glass pack resonator that left the bottom end torque alone and is tucked up top of bottom of the frame rail; exhaust exits down and before the bumper...so no more crush opportunities;) .

i just want it loud! :-) ill leave it alone though if im going to lose TQ...if theres one thing i like more then loudness, its power. Yeah, i know, why the heck am i driving a 470?
