Contemplating a purchase from a friend. Well cared for stock LX470 ‘05. 200k mikes. Runs fine. Engine light on. Supposedly catalytic converter starting to lose power causing the light to be on. He said may last several more years hard to tell. Also speedometer and tachometer don’t work. Talked to a guy who thought he could do each job for $500 each. Guy is asking Kelley blue book price but seems to think it’s the excellent condition price. Anybody on here have experience with these issues and are they expensive fixes?

KBB excellent price for an 05 appears to be about $12k, which is low for a truly excellent condition truck.

One with 200k in good shape is probably worth that, without the issues mentioned. If he is truly a friend and you want the truck, tell him you will pay his asking price once Lexus has fixed all the issues he mentions (at his expense) and returns it to 'excellent' condition. Or, just pass.

Sound advice.

Did your friend try to remove the cluster to get rid of the CEL bulb then screw up the cluster reinstall?

CEL throws a code. What code?

Thanks. Sounds like good advice. I talked to HIS car guy who has taken care of that car for the last 100k miles. He said could fix for around $1000 and continue to service for me going forward. Called Toyota and they said the catalytic converters itself would be more than that. Im thinking I’ll take it Toyota pay the $199 to do full inspection and if what they say jives with the other guy I’ll let him fix. Offer $10k.
Is the odometer working? If not, the car has more than 200k miles.
it works. Speedometer actually worked when first picked it up. Tachometer only thing out. Speedometer our next day. He told me it happens sometimes. Stayed out the next couple days I had it.

Ha. No he just a doctor. He bought it in 2005 and is single owner. He’s never done anything to it except have his “car guy” pick it up at his house for routine maintenance. He did just replace all the tires and breaks. So that’s a plus.

no way I would pay him that with a check engine light on and the speedometer and tach not working. What person thinks that's excellent conditon??

So, it would cost you $1k to fix the issues right after you buy it, and he wants KBB price? That sounds insane to me. I'd offer $10k AFTER he fixed all this stuff personally.

I have no idea what it takes to fix the gauge cluster. Could simply be a loose connection, or could be $$$.

Catalytic codes are normally P0420 / P0430. This can be the result of an exhaust leak, but more often than not requires o2 sensors and/or cats. For some flavor:
QTY2 - 17410-50370 - Cats - List price is $1520/ea.
QTY2 - 89465-60150 - 02 sensors - List price is $220/ea.
QTY2 - 89465-69175 - 02 sensors - List price is $210/ea.
Plus gaskets, seals, bolts etc. Add it all up and deduct 30-40% if you are willing to buy genuine parts from the cheapest UAE/Japanese vendor. Then add labor.

A gauge cluster rebuild/refresh is about $500 and involves downtime of the rig. Assume that is the cost to get the dials running properly again. For the DIY, the dials use stepper motors (which do fail) that can be found for the Prado on eBay for $18/ea when I checked last week.

However, if the circuit board is toast, you're best off buying a used cluster and getting the ODO reprogrammed correctly.

and to add, likely his “car guy” that didn’t fix this stuff in the past is not the right car guy moving forward. I’ve been shopping for a long time and just picked up a relatively mint 06 with records and its truly excellent for 13.5. This puts Yours, if 100 percent rust free at no more than 12k 100 percent working.

Offer 10.5 if everything is perfect (Perfect), and fix it right and hopefully wind up at no more than 12.5.

Otherwise there’s better deals right now from strangers on this site. That friend does not understand. You have other opportunities.

A doctor 🙃

To add, I have a 200 that has 220 that’s worth about 8 in great interior and mechanical but with rust
