I searched for this topic, but didn't find much so here's an FYI. If this already exists in the FAQ, I apologize. If not, feel free to stick parts of it in there.
I thought I'd share a recent dealership experience about getting another key for my 1997 LX450. When I purchased the vehicle, it only came with one key and I've always felt uncomfortable knowing there was no backup if I broke or lost the one I had. Yesterday I called Lexus of Bellevue for prices and then went in to get a key.
Prices:
-$68 for the blank key including cutting.
-$120 for the remote fob including programming.
What I had to do:
-To have a key cut, you must arrive in person with proof of ownership (title or registration) and photo ID .
-To get a remote programmed, I was instructed to bring the vehicle into the dealership. I believe you can program a remote on your own, but that service is included in the price of the remote anyway.
The process was painless but expensive at a little over $200 after tax just for a single key and remote! In all, I spent about 30 minutes in the dealership between the parts and service department. The replacement remote is identical and the key is nearly identical, although the base is a bit smaller.
I initially considered just getting a backup key, but the security system is only armed or disarmed with the remote (unless you modify something I'm sure!) It really came down to me wanting two complete sets like the car should have had to begin with.
Yes, this is ludicrous since we all remember the good old days where key replacement cost about $3 at your local hardware store. However, in the world of keyless entry, slot cut keys and when compared to other manufacturers, it is not out of line. A friend recently had to replace his key for his 2001 BMW at the cost of around $250. The key and remote are integrated and the batteries are apparently not serviceable. His dead remote battery cost him $250! Another money maker for the manufacturer and everyone seems to be headed that way.
