I searched for this topic, but didn't find much so here's an FYI. If this already exists in the FAQ, I apologize. If not, feel free to stick parts of it in there.

I thought I'd share a recent dealership experience about getting another key for my 1997 LX450. When I purchased the vehicle, it only came with one key and I've always felt uncomfortable knowing there was no backup if I broke or lost the one I had. Yesterday I called Lexus of Bellevue for prices and then went in to get a key.

Prices:
-$68 for the blank key including cutting.
-$120 for the remote fob including programming.

What I had to do:
-To have a key cut, you must arrive in person with proof of ownership (title or registration) and photo ID .
-To get a remote programmed, I was instructed to bring the vehicle into the dealership. I believe you can program a remote on your own, but that service is included in the price of the remote anyway.

The process was painless but expensive at a little over $200 after tax just for a single key and remote! In all, I spent about 30 minutes in the dealership between the parts and service department. The replacement remote is identical and the key is nearly identical, although the base is a bit smaller.

I initially considered just getting a backup key, but the security system is only armed or disarmed with the remote (unless you modify something I'm sure!) It really came down to me wanting two complete sets like the car should have had to begin with.

Yes, this is ludicrous since we all remember the good old days where key replacement cost about $3 at your local hardware store. However, in the world of keyless entry, slot cut keys and when compared to other manufacturers, it is not out of line. A friend recently had to replace his key for his 2001 BMW at the cost of around $250. The key and remote are integrated and the batteries are apparently not serviceable. His dead remote battery cost him $250! Another money maker for the manufacturer and everyone seems to be headed that way.

Thats exactly why I freak out everytime i misplace my keys. It is a PITA to get a replacement.

AFAIK, there is no way around paying $60-$70 for a key replacement at a dealership.

But if you dont mind your remote fob having a Toyota logo on it instead of a Lexus logo, they're considerably cheaper fron CDan and the programming takes about 2 minutes even if you have never looked under your seat.

Ah, I certainly would not have minded a Toyota symbol, but I thought the remotes were different for some reason. Oh well, it's done now. You can use my example as a completely by the book, spendy way to do it.

BTDT. That's the best part of this forum - somebody has probably already been through what you're doing and is willing to make it as easy and efficient as possible for the next guy.

WHOOOOAA:eek:

I dont know if it's a diffrence between lexus and toyota, but I just had 2 new keys cut for my 96 LC from the Toyota dealership down in Tacoma for $7 each, cut! They were cut by my VIN...

I also ordered my keyless remote off ebay for $25 - programmed myself in 5 min - works great!

man, if that's the case I'm glad I got a Toyota and not a Lexus

I believe the Toyota and Lexus keys are not interchangeable. It's not the blank that costs a lot, it's the expensive machine that no one is going to have except a dealership to cut the slot key for a Lexus key. The Toyota key is "normal" key with external teeth. I think OEM remotes are relatively expensive whether Toyota or Lexus.

The 97 doesnt have a chip. I know you had to do that because you lost yours, but you can get a copy made at any full service locksmith. I think mine cost $25

Every locksmith I called said they couldn't do the slot cut. Maybe there are some around that have the equipment, but I couldn't find one anywhere close to me. I've seen the Lexus blanks on ebay for cheap, but without someone to cut it I figured they were no help. Maybe I'll ask around some more to find a locksmith with the right tools.

I've found multiple locksmiths that can cut a lexus (bmw, mercedes, etc.) key and much cheaper than a dealer. I know our keys don't have chips in them, but for the record locksmiths can program those too for a lot less than the dealer. The Ford dealership wanted $125 to program my key to my Cobra, the local locksmith did it for $30.

Great info guys. I'm buying my first 80 tomorrow and he's already informed me that there's only one key. I'll be sure to use this as bartering material.

LX450 Key

In Asheville, A.L. Odom Locksmiths cut us a key for $30 a few months ago. They had a blank in stock!!!

I just wanted to add another data point. I have a 97 LX450 and needed additional keys.
My only key was pretty worn out with rounded groves.

I purchased an OEM Lexus key blank on eBay. Then called around and found a locksmith that has
the laser key cutter. He was able to make a new "master", not a copy, from the old worn out key.
He charged me $20 per cut. He also had some after market blanks, but since I had my own, I did
not check the price. So, the hard part is finding the right locksmith. The one I used in in Pasadena,
California. And I think he will do it through the mail.

Yes. When you purchased you should have been given a wallet key which also has the keycode on it. You can take lots of documentation to a lexus dealership and they will treat you like you stole it before they tell you your code and/or cut you a key. Or you can take the key cylinder off of he passenger side front door and you will find the code written on it. Then you can just find someone who can cut a lexus key for you with that code. Lexus will charge a LOT. I know of a guy in Texas who did a set for me.. 20-30 dollars a key I think.

and here is an example of a wallet key you should have gotten that also has a key code on it.

LEXUS OEM FACTORY CREDIT CARD WALLET SMART KEY LX450 41337 - New - Mint! | eBay

Mine quoted 125 so that is a screaming deal!

The wife lost one of the keys for the LS, same type as the LX. Used an ebay vendor, shot a close up picture of the remaining key, sent it to them and new keys came in the mail. Got two much cheaper than anything I found local for one and they work great.

OK. so i need to check the paperwork i picked up from the lexus dealer i went to to see if there is a key code on the paperwork they printed out for me if i want to record a key code?

and to get this done cheaper i go to a locksmith with the proper (laser?) machine?

here are my OEM pricing. still need to figure out what i need to buy if i want one of those wallet key cards though...
