so i put a new to me upper rear hatch on. i had a guy at the local body shop around the corner do it for me after hours. the old one was damaged.

anyway twice now since putting it on when i open the hatch the rear lights, licence plate bulb, front headlights - and i just noticed when going to take a pic to show the keys were not in the the ignition - that the dash lights light up.

then i noticed when i lowered the hatch partways they all went off.

i asked the guy about the plug and wiring and he said they just reused the existing wiring.

is it supposed to behave like this because the old hatch never did this at least as far as i can remember.

also is there some kind of daylight sensor in the LX450 because i'm not positive but it seems to be doing this at night?(!)

Look at the wiring harness at the top of the hatch. Odds are there is a bare wire grounding out and causing all the lights to come on.

Remember Toyota switches the ground side, not the hot side.

bring it back and have them fix the wiring. It's obvious they screwed something up. Shops warranty their work for a short time period.

I keep re-reading this and I'm not convinced that it's a liftgate wiring problem.

The headlights and tailights are on separate circuits isolated by separate relays, and neither circuit runs to the liftgate. Since both circuits are being energized, there would have to be a common denominator, which would point to the headlight stalk switch and/or the light retainer relay.

@landcruiser3DP do you always leave the headlights switched on, letting them automatically turn off?

thanks for this. it's odd.
i believe they would have reused my existing upper liftgate harness since the one on the hatch i put on was cut. so they would have had to reuse my harness. again i replaced the upper hatch.
and there is a bunch of wiring in there. some must go to the lock mechanism?
anyway i /do/ tend to leave the lights on at the stalk. i only had a problem one or maybe two times with this though when i think the button on the drivers side stuck in the closed position. so the lights stayed on even after i got out of the truck because it didn't sense the door opening.
i know where the headlight stalk is. where is the light retainer relay please?
also. i am going to try it again tonight in the dark because so far it only happens in the dark.

boy. i admit i find these headlights super confusing. i guess i will have to read up on them again.
i tested again but i won't bore you with it.
quick question:
1. if i leave the headlights on at the stalk then the headlights and taillights and dash and rear license plate bulb will be lit up? assuming no key in the ignition?
2. but if i open and close the drivers door they should shut off? yes?
3. i mean or do i need to have a key in the ignition snd then to take the key out and open and close the door to get the lights to turn off (with headlights on at the stalk)?
4. could there be a lazy sensor somewhere? i mean it's happened twice where the light turn ON when i open the hatch and i know i watched them go off when i partially closed the rear hatch. so i'm wondering if a switch somewhere could be sticking somehow?(!)

IN PROPER OPERATION IF LIGHTS LEFT ON KEY TAKEN OUT AND DOOR OPENED LIGHTS SHOULD GO OFF THEN UPON PUTTING KEY BACK IN IGN AND TURNING KEY TO 'ON' POSITION LIGHTS SHOULD COME BACK ON
or IF YOU MANUALLY TURN HEADLIGHT SWITCH OFF AND THEN BACK ON THE LIGHTS SHOULD COME BACK ON

Ive answered 1,2 & 4 in capitals (not shouting :) )

Before you go chasing ghosts, try leaving the headlight switch turned OFF. Then see if the problem still happens.
