I have a 99 LX that has several instrument bulbs out (ECT indicator, cruise indicator, the "D" light, etc.) Does anyone know if those bulbs are commercially available (if so, part number?) or are they dealer-only bulbs? Thanks.

OK. With that suggestion in mind, and assuming all of the subject bulbs are the same "Does anyone know if the cruise bulb is commercially available (if so, part number?) or is a dealer-only bulb? Thanks.

im not particularly knowledgeable about the bulbs in question, however, CruiserDan aka CDan here on the forums can hook you up with the correct, OEM bulbs from toyota.

The bulbs are cheap and I see no need to risk saving a few cents on an aftermarket. The labor of installing them is the big issue. If you can find a longer lasting bulb, then it would be worthwhile.

Maybe get the original bulb from cruiserdan and shoot it over to George the LED guy and have him create an LED replacement for us that will last forever.

Also might try these guys - looks like they have a LED replacement for the 194 style dash bulb.

Thanks for the comments. Are you saying that all of the dash indicator bulbs are nothing but 194's? That's what I was trying to determine with my first post.........please confirm

I can't confirm that but the Sylvania web guide indicated the 194s for the dash lights. I would get an OEM replacement from cruiserdan to confirm before opening the dash. That way you have part that will work and a part that might work better before doing all the work of opening the dash. Light bulbs are cheap.

Just got done tearing into the combi meter to dig out the "D" indicator and Headlight indicator bulbs.

They are not the same bulb.

Stealer would not give me the part number. I guess I'll go buy the bulbs from them tomorrow,...

As noted - labor is the biggest issue. That combi meter is a real PITA to get out, and the "D" bulb is buried in the center - you have to remove the main circuit board assy etc.

so is it a 168 or 194# bulb????

still no verdict on this yet? or toyota only makes this size??? I highly doubt that LOL

The bulb is fitted to a small plastic turn and lock type housing, similar to the ones in toyota switches, who knows if anybody else makes them, just buy the original, they are only about 1 watt globes anyway, if you want you can modify the base and fit a led. They seem quite accessable

I expect this pic will be the same or similar for the 98-02 models, the 03 came out with surface mounted LEDS except for a few bulbs which were for trac/vsc/fr rr diff lock etc

My BMW M Roady had very similar looking bulb bases. Once removed, the bulb easily pulled out of the base and could be replaced by a 194(IIRC). I had to buy an OEM bulb assembly just in case though.

The dealer not giving the part number is just sh*ty. I'd find another dealer and get the number from them. I'd also let the management know that if their parts guy can't give a part number, you can shop elsewhere for your next Cruiser. :bang:

Usually, the local Toyota dealer will give out part numbers if asked nicely, but the local Lexus dealer will not - probably because the Lexus dealer doesn't want people comparing prices and discovering that he is charging 20 to 40% more than the Toyota dealer for the exact same parts.

I pieced together the part number for the bulbs I just changed in 99 LX470, from Mud and dealers. Here they are:

90076-04003: "D" Indicator, bulb assembly
(Same p/n for all gear selector indicators, e.g. P, R, N, D, L2, L1.)

83120-60020: Headlight On Indicator, bulb assembly
90981-11018: Headlight On Indicator, glass bulb only
(90981-11018 + plastic base = 83120-60020)
(Same p/n's for all horizontal bottom row lights and some other locations also.)

There is also a third bulb group p/n, according to the dealer, for other bulb locations. I didn't get that p/n.

The parts pricing difference between Lexus and Toyota dealers can actually be more than 40% - for example, the 90076-04003 bulb was quoted at over $7 from Lexus dealer, but I bought it for $1.49 from a Toyota dealer. I always feel like I should have a jar of vaseline when I walk into a Lexus dealer. Or maybe just get out my wallet and hand all my money to them, to save them the trouble of ripping me off by selling me grossly overpriced parts.

I posted in the wrong thread but here is my contribution to replacing these t1 bulbs.

Before and after,

Ordered this for 14.99 next day delivery but I had to trim the base a bit and took me 4 tries before I was able to get the led polarity correct. Some were trimmed too much and they were loose in the socket so I had to pull a little of the wire that contacted the board to shim it tight. 1hour total to disassemble and reassemble 4 times over. Hazard light still out so I'll give it one more try before buttoning it up.

I didn't even know my buttons lit up until I saw this ih8mud post.

I dont think this Amazon purchase is the right product but for 14.99 and a little effort i'm gonna give it a shot. I pulled the led out of one of them and replaced 1 of the bulbs on the original Toyota wedge to compare and see if offroading will shake any loose.

ETOPARS 10 X Green Car Auto Dashboard T4/T4.2 Neo Wedge LED Bulb Cluster Instrument Dash Climate Gauge Light Control

Adding to this thread:

Replaced my 'D' and 'P' light (P wasn't burned out, but it might be next). Tough to remove the cluster, and I scratched the column cover. Apply duct tape beforehand and you'll likely only scratch it a little. I tried tape upon the reassembly and it scraped and peeled off and left goo behind. Can't win 'em all.

Because of the auto tilt-wheel function, I had to put the key in, tilt the wheel, then pull the tilt-wheel fuse to hold the wheel in the 'down' position. My telescope motor is also toast, so I don't know if I'm all the way 'out'. There is just VERY little clearance to get the cluster free.

Anyway, removing the cluster is a pain........

.....until you get to the bulbs, where another reply here indicated that you have to carefully remove the overlaying circuit board and many ribbon cables. That's a REAL pain, but with care, you can do this.

I got it all back together (with scratches on the cover) and it all seems to work well.

I ordered the same ETOPARS bulbs from Amazon as albylam:

To identify the polarity of the LEDs I used a camera battery and marked the positive side of the bulbs:

Lights01.jpg

The next photos shows which side is positive and which is negative. Use this to save yourself some trial and error as it is quite a pain to constantly take apart the unit:

Final result:

The fit of these bulbs was so so - I damaged two bulbs inserting them as they were hard to turn without applying quite a bit of downward pressure. Delivery was quick and I am happy with the brightness so I won't complain too much.

Now that its been several months, how are you liking the bulbs? Any of them burn out?
Can they dim down low?
