For the past few months my LX has been making an annoying squealing sound while driving. The sound is coming from the front of the car. It starts once you get over 15 mph and is really loud between 25 and 35 mph. After driving for a while it will make the sound at low speeds because of heat I assume. This sound only occurs when the wheels are turning, it is not associated with the engine and does not increase with engine rpm’s or change when brake are applied. Over the past year me and my dad have done the wheel bearings, greased the drivetrain, cv axels, and basically rebuilt a lot of the front end. We are thinking it is maybe the spindle bushing and will grease it tonight. Any ideas on what this can be? It has me stumped. And also it’s just squealing there is no grinding sound. Thanks

Since you checked engine and brake noise off the list.......

Does the noise change in tone if you take a turn and shift all the weight to one side or another ? Or does it happen no matter which way you turn

Idk, just a guessing game here. Power steering pump moaning when under a load ? Can you turn the wheel when stopped and re create the noise ?

Really loud , like you hear it inside the cab with windows closed ?

Has a new power steering pump that is quiet. And it does not change with steering. I can definitely hear it with the windows down and can’t hear it with them up unless it is quiet outside.

I think I might have the same thing -
I have a squeak/squeal from the front left (an RHD truck). I feel it is related to the brakes because If I touch them, it will go away until I hit the next bump at the right angle, and then it's back.

It also disappears when I turn slightly left or right, but it is always there when I brake or drive straight ahead.
Unless the car is cold - I have about 10 min of driving in the mornings with no squeaky squeal.

Oh - and it goes away when it rains, or I when do a water crossing.

Given that it stops and starts and even disappears when wet, I assume it's nothing major. However, driving around town is a little embarrassing, and a squeak or squeal means something is getting worn down, so I'd like to isolate it, if possible.

Would anyone happen to have any ideas?
Does this sound like worn brake pads? If that were the case, I would have expected more of a grinding.
Why would slight turns left or right make it stop?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks heaps!

I'm not the most mechanical guy here but have some experience figuring out noises. In my experience if you hit the brakes and the noise changes you can be pretty sure its brake related, as you mentioned.

Intermittent squeaking, either dirty/greasy rotors or maybe caliper slides need to be lubed? If it was more of a grinding then it would be your warning tab on the brake pads scraping ( like you said )......Just a guess from some idiot in Montana , but start with some brake cleaner / degreaser and a hose down then maybe think about caliper slides ( if thats even what they're called ) and lubin' em up

Awesome - thank you Mike.
Thank you for confirming my thoughts about it being brake-related.

I hit it with some brake cleaner the other day, but that didn't make any difference.
I'll swing by the car wash this weekend and get in there with the water blaster.

If I have no luck there, I'll find somewhere to jack it up, remove the wheel, and try to find how to lube the calliper slides.
I suspect that is what it is - I wasn't aware they needed lubing now and again.

I'll post what I find.
Thank you!

This may be of more use to you, since my advice should be taken lightly. Although I can't find specific install / maintenance info yet. Will post here if I do

Heres some pics of the calipers and slides

The issue was where the cv axel meets the hub. I did not think that was it because i soaked it with silicon spray and the sound was still there. I soaked it with wd 40 and it went away. simple fix
