With the thought of 38.5s, I know 5.29s really wont be enough espically since I'm already under powered. Does anyone make gears lower than 5.29s?

volvos start with 5.99's and get lower, they would be more expensive than gears but when you add up gears, lockers, seals and gaskets longfields and upgraded brakes, the difference isnt much.

plus you get the clearance and lift plus factory selectable lockers with the volvo portals.

I don't think there are yota gears lower than 5.29s, there is some significant grinding required to get the cross shaft in with 5.29s as it is.

wouldn't you start to be concerned with going with a lower gearset then 5.29's? i thought as the lower you went the deeper the cut was in the gears and the smaller the pinion making it slightly weaker?

In an SF rear end you have to grind even with 4.56 gears. 5.29 take a LOT of grinding A LOT. Not reccomended for an SF rear end.

There are no lower gears for the full size Land Cruiser diff.

My truck is lighter than the average, but 5.29s with 40" tires is more than enough gear.

Along those lines...I run a fully loaded 80 on 38's and too much gearing....I wouldn't worry about the need for lower gears unless you're over a 40" tire. I'd save that $$$ and put it towards a crawl box :grinpimp: if Marlin would only come out with one for the 80....oh well...have to go with the Aus. box once the cash is secured...

In a FF setup you don't need to worry ( as same as your FF front axle ) about grinding .. but ..

If you want more gearing ( IMOP ) go with other kind of stuff like a doubler or crawl box ( other cheapest options as marks low gear set )

Unfortunately a doubler doesn't do anything for you in high range. If you are running tall tires with a lot of width and lots of bite, you absolutely need steeper gearing in high range too unless your use of the rig doesn't include anything at all where speeds at higher than low range can provide. Especially in the case of the original poster who has a 3FE powered FJ80 (4.10s stock) and doesn't have the option of a crawler box anyway. ;)

Cool! Looks like they do. This is a new development to me. I don't pay as much attention to the 80 series as I do the earlier rigs. I missed this.

lower than 5.29's? i know you got the curse of the 3f but you still want to go over 65-70 with rapping that s*** out right? I have 4.88s with a true 37 and feel damn near stock power... go with the 5.29's and watch for christo's new crawler box see page 2 post by gary https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=111286. actaully, you can get the current gears from aa as well cause your 91-92....

on a side note i hate to say it but 91-92 are s***. sf rear, drum brakes rear, that 3f... almost worth taking all your gear you got for your rig and dumping it into 94 or newer... but you gotta wheel whatcha got.

What exactly do you have to grind to fit the lower gear ratios?
Teeth on the ring gear. At least four of them, maybe five (don't recall right now without looking at the gears). Pretty deeply too.

A 91-92 may not be as nifty cool as the '93 and newer, but they are far from s***. The rear drum brakes work just fine, Cruiser SF rears are not exactly prone to failure and they're a lot less maintenance than a FF rear. The 3FE is an excellent motor. The end result of six decades of refinement. It's an easy 400,000 mile motor if cared for. Is the rig a hot rod? Nope. But it was never meant to be. It'll do everything it was designed to do and everything that 99.9999% of the users need it to do. Toss a set of ARBs in there and any difference in performance on the trails will be completely insignificant. And that 3F... Lot simpler and less expensive to service and maintain too.

I thought SF is nice rear axle .. yap have some disadvanges if you compated ti with a Toy FF but drum brakes . ? easy, rear disk brake kit .. and you are done.

ARB front and rear .. ( and BTW you get new lockers ) and gearing .. you are done. I'm not sure about treannys but it's a important issue if the H440 are more reliable than H442 ..
