Hey everybody, my oil pressure gauge is reading below the “normal range” at idle according to the owners manual. Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue. Could it be a faulty sending unit?

If you'd noticed on any of the dozens of other threads about oil pressure, these 2UZ's often appear to have low oil pressure, sometimes only 1/4 or less at idle. You can spend your time and money worrying about a problem that isn't really a problem, but I wouldn't recommend it.

This is where I’m at

I think the safe play would be to connect a mechanical gauge to verify you actually have pressure, and then I'd replace the sending unit. Mine idles at about a 1/4 , and when I bought the truck it concerned me a little, so I checked it with a gauge. Don't remember what it read, but it was in the 'ok' range. So, I just see the 1/4 as normal now. I'd want something more to show than you have there though, so hopefully a sending unit fixes it. Seems to be a pretty common issue. Good luck.

I had this issue on my Sequoia; at idle, the needle would be at the bottom line. It would raise to just below 1/4 mark... that was the max oil pressure it would show. Initially it freaked me out, but after confirming the engine was properly full of oil, I started suspecting a bad sending unit. Replaced the sending unit and all was well.

It’s located by the oil filter and takes about 5 minutes. You will lose some oil when you take it out, so do it the next time you change your oil.

I had the same problem. Oil pressure would only go as high as 1/4 when driving. At idle it drops to the lowest tick. Replaced the sender and now the gauge reads 3/4 on cold startup, 1/4 at idle and 1/2 when driving.

One other thing I noticed is if the gauge is at the bottom mark and I turn the engine off, then right back on again it will correct itself and the needle will be at the 1/4 mark at idle. Thoughts?

Possibly the connector has a loose pin or wire?

i heard some people has opened the engine pan and cleaned whatever is in there (dont know what is called) but oil buildup and fixed their oil pressure Gage problem.

Check the dipstick. If a Toyota 4.7 has oil in it, the oil pressure is fine. Oil pressure guages are basically useless on these engines, and they don't generally have oiled-parts failures.

Could it possibly be an issue with the stepper motor in the gauge cluster?

My 04 idles at 1/4 when warm and at 1/2 around 2,000 RPM. I had a bad sending unit previously and it read lower than those readings at all times. It eventually got to where it wouldn’t read at all on a few occasions.
Mine recently started doing this. Made me nervous but everything seems to be ok aside from that

It could also be your cluster, there's some threads about it.
