Hello everyone..

Recently I bought a 92 Fj80, it got a very nice interiors and everything on it works well, but the engine 3FE feels like it have not much power, a month ago I checked cylinder compression and it gave me 90 in each cylinder. I was thinking to rebuild the engine because everything on it really worth it.

It's good idea try to rebuild the engine or look forward for a used one?

I'm new with the cruisers and I 'll apreciate any advice you guys can give
me.

Before going down the new engine/rebuild route right away off of one test from one test kit. GET A GOOD tester-unless yours is. And check it dry/wet differences in cylinders.

Do some routine maintenance and thow a few bucks into good syn oil (though some may protest).

Check it after the maintenance...I guess I am just saying get good data before jumping the gun.

The 3fe aint a "fast" engine to begin with-no Fs really are-you get the point...

Welcome to the forum!

I agree it makes no sense to jump on a rebuild if the engine's running fine. Also, you don't provide any info on miles, etc. A worn engine like yours may provide 100,000 more miles of service for free whereas a $3000 rebuild might give you 1mpg better over that same period and accelerate slightly faster. What's that worth?

Be careful with the oil if you do a wet test, too much oil can create havoc with the Cats. 90 psi on a engine that is supose to have a min of around 100 psi is close. As other point out you may want to see about Oil consumption and fuel milage before rebuilding. Good luck with the choice. later robbie

Thanks for the advice.

The Fj80 milage is 113,000 not much to have this kind of problems, and it burns like a half quarter of oil every 3 months, it start at first starter stoke in the morning and the gas consuption is in average, much else if I compare with my 89 4Runner V6.

And I think I'll get another opinion before get down the engine.

Thank you!

Half a quart every 3 months? That sounds like no problem to me. You should have a good 200,000 MORE life in that engine.

If you're at high elevation, your compression will be lower. 3% less per 1000 feet above sea level is the rule.

From your statement i gather you did not do the compression test then. I would hope to see around 140-150 at that kind of milage. Oil comsumption is with in specs also (especially if you are using a 5w-30 r 10w-30 oil). If it is true that you did not do the compression test your self, then I also would have another one done. Try to find some one that has worked on cruisers before and know them. It will help to have a better idea of what you need for many things, not just if the engine is OK or not. later robbie

I have the same problem but I've not done any tests, next week I will take the injectors out and clean em too see if it does a difference... If not, then I will run a cmopression test. Or just add a thicker oil :D

Have you decarboned your motor?
You can have it done at a shop for $$$ or you can use Seafoam.
I justed Seafoamed and Toy EFI the Camry and 80.
This is the first time I Seafoamed the Camry and there was plenty of blue smoke.
The wife says it has more power now. My gas milage is back up to 13 14 mpg from 11mpg on the 80. The Camry went from the low 23 24mpg to 26 27mpg.
The 80 smoked some but I try to Seafoam it twice a year.
Get some Toyota EFI cleaner and or BG44k.
If your vehicle has been sitting for a long time you can get some Carbon Guard from boat dealer and dump it down the sparkplug hole to free up stuck rings.
I used Seafoam in the clynders to see if it would help low compression on my 2f and my compresson on the low clynder went back up.

When I had my 3fe, there was major build up under the valve cover and it smoked like crazy when I Seafoamed it.
Do a major tune up and get your motor clean, and at some piont you should feel an increase in power.

I live right now in a high altitude area, Laughlin Nevada, there's are many hills so everytime you drive through there you will always go UP haha, anyway, the problem is that when going up the freeway, if I go @ 65 then decreases lil bit lil down to 60 o 55 the only way to get it back to 65 is my pressing more gas but it looks like the engine suffers to get it back to 65, I down shift to 3rd and REVs go up to 3,500... even my wife tells me she fells the truck underpowered, (she drives a 200hp accord). At this point i feel it could be many things, but I will start with the injectors and thank you for the SEAFOAM tip, NAPA AUTO PARTS HAS IT, I HOPE WITH this I don't have to open the injectors... laters

You can also free stuck rings and gently clean the innards of your engine with AutoRx.

55 mph on the "hills" around Laughlin? I would call that a FAST 3FE!:D
