Reviving a closed thread: https://forum.ih8mud.com/100-series-cruisers/309993-loose-telescopic-steering-wheel.html

My LX has developed a loose steering wheel over the last couple of years and I finally got around to taking it apart and seeing what was loose.

I found that there are two #40 Torx Bolts that act as the hinge for tilt function of the wheel. There is a copper/resin bushing with each of the bolts and the one on the passenger's side had some play in it.

I searched but have been unable to find a part number for the bolt, or the bushing.

I re-installed the bushing and wrapped the bolt with some teflon tape. This removed all the slack and made the wheel tight again, while I look for the parts.

Sorry for the poor quality of the pics, my phone's camera is lacking.

I will be having the dealer turn off the auto-tilt function to save the wear on these bushings.

Sent a PM but also thought I would share here.

The highlighted part is the bushing, part # 90389-08124, and there is a total of 6 according to the catalog. The part that I put the red boxes around is the bolt, PNC 45855 is part # 45855-60010 qty 4, PNC 45856B is part # 45856-60010 qty 2.

At the time of this posting retail/MUD pricing is as follows:

90389-08124 $2.47 each retail, $1.85 each MUD
45855-60010 $3.65 each retail, $2.74 each MUD
45856-60010 $3.45 each retail, $2.59 each MUD

Awesome service.

Update.

Parts came in from Sam at Lowe Toyota 800-870-0038.

Installed (2) new 90389-08124 Steering Column Bushings and (2) new 45855-60010 Steering Column #40 Torx Bolts.

There is no more side-to-side play in the steering wheel.

Again, thanks to Sam at Lowe Toyota for finding these parts for me.

I have made an appointment at the dealer to disable the Auto Telescope/Tilt feature to save some wear on these bushings and the (2) electric motors.

If you're up to it, I believe you can disable the telescope/tilt via the $35 Chinese Techstream. I have not tried it yet though. Otherwise, dealer might charge you 1/2 hr labor to do it.

Is this for side to side only? I have some up down movement as well
Mine was more side to side than up and down, but I only replaced (2) of the bushings and bolts. There's quite a few of them in there.

Do you remember if it was possible/easy to get to other bushings? I just don't want to get 6 of them + bolts just to realize I can only replace 2
I did all of mine.

Yes, I remember them all being accessible.

If I were doing it today, I'd do them all.

Thanks for the help, very helpful now its perfect

Thanks guys for the write up but when I went to check the bushings (I thought they might be missing as there was so much play!) on loosening the lower two of the upper four screws, the steering wheel sort of popped out a bit and it was a bit of a struggle (with some force) to put it back.
Can anyone suggest what I did wrong there? I think it should be OK but I’m a bit hesitant to drive the car until I check I haven’t done something wrong!
Thanks in advance!!

Actually it was the upper two (further towards the front of the vehicle).
UPDATE: I tried a drive around the block and it seems OK. I guess the splines at the end of the steering shaft came out and needed relocating?
