They can be quite loose before you have to change the hinges. You can adjust them tho' so that the doors are easy to open and close.

I've noticed that my driver's door has some play in it when it's closed. If I'm driving on a rough road, or being buffeted by heavy wind, I can feel the door shaking.
Is that what we are talking about here?

I replaced my upper driver side door hinge do to excessive play. I should have bought a lower hinge and replaced it while I had the fender off, but it didn't show signs of excessive wear.

You have to remove the front fender to get access to the hinge bolts. Removing the fender is pretty simple, but you will need to drill out a rivet connecting the fender to the trim piece that runs along the bottom of the headlights/grill. The hinge came in black paint/primer from Toyota. Removing the bumper cover is not necessary to remove the fender, I was doing multiple projects.

The new upper hinge reduced the amount of movement the door has on the highway, but did not eliminate it. There are two piece of weather stripping (one on the body and one on the door) that I think would tighten up the door. I have not yet replaced the weather stripping.

The hinges can be adjusted without taking the door off. It's just a bit tight to get a spanner on the heads. I think I used 3 different spanners and small steps, like 1/12 of a turn.

Sounds like it. I noticed the door felt weird as I closed it, then got out and lifted the door up and down to see that it had play in the hinges.
