Hi AZ peoples...

I've done a little searching and have found a few "off-road" trailers which are just small, maybe 4'x4' with tent and camping equipment installed.

I've also seen the military trailers which are similar size.

I'm looking for basically a utility trailer to haul my ATV on, at least 5'x6'

Can I just buy a cheap utility trailer where the wheels stick out past the cargo floor and slap on some large tires - does anyone know of any places that specialize in something like custom cargo trailers - preferably in AZ if possible?

I have an extra one-- I will give a special price (essentially what I paid for it) to CSC members.

Actually now that I read your thread, I should say that mine is military, and it doesn't have a tailgate. It thus would not be any good for carrying an ATV.

That being said, I am not sure if there are "offroad" trailers that can be used haulin an ATV.

For a general utility trailer, try Graverly's in Apache Junction. We bought a regular utility trailer from them (5x8, with steel mesh two foot sides and a tailgate) They make trailers right there-- they have good prices, and a wide selection-- and they can probably make it any way you want it.

I asked the guy at Graverlys about making an offroad style trailer (this was before the group buy of military trailers) and he acted like he could do it-- but we never discussed any details. And I have no idea what one would cost.

Mike S on this board has a nice custom trailer that was made for him by a guy in California. That guy could build a "big" offroad style trailer, that might hold an ATV. But it would be expensive. It would probably be cheaper to buy two trailers--- my military and a regular utility, then to have something like that custom made.

Your trailers are small M416s.

I've seen some M105s I believe that are 54" between the wheelwells on ebay...

I've found a few pics, something like this would be nice if it had at least a 53-54" deck width

My trailers are actually canadian M101 trailers-- effectively updated copies of the M416.

There certainly are larger military trailers-- but I think that most of them are so large that a landcruiser could not tow them offroad. At least not easily.

I think the trailer in your first picture is a 1.5 ton trailer. I think that would be way way to big to tow anywhere offroad. Have you seen the trucks they tow those with?

OTOH, BMT has one that might work-- I think it is an 3/4 ton military trailer. Not sure what number it is. But it might not be to big to tow offroad in some circumstances.

And I know that I have seen at least one military trailer that is a good size. It might have been called a "baby ben hur" trailer. It is larger an M416, but not too large, and was WWII vintage. The one I saw was parked by BMT's house.

Where is BMT these days anyway?

Jared

Here are pictures of "ben hur" trailers. Not sure if they are the smaller "baby" ones.

You're right -- that's the M105. Sometimes you'll see a bunch of other letters after the 105. It's a 1.5 ton. There is a 3/4 ton trailer -- I think the US Military designation is M101? It looks like the M105 in the picture, but has some minor differences. In person, they're smaller than the M105. One way that I've been able to tell the difference is by looking at the landing leg -- the M105 has the one with the wheel -- the 3/4T version has a landing leg similar to the M416.

Looks nice, but the 50" wide bed would be too narrow.

My ATV is wider by a few inches.

Plus that $4000 price is a little crazy. Im probably going to have to buy a cheap trailer and modify it myself.

Yikes...

My quad looks almost as wide as the LX450...

That is probably your best bet.

But it would be worth it to go see Graverlys in AJ. Tell him you want a 5x8 trailer with 2 foot metal sides, and have him do a SOA on the axle so you can run bigger tires. You would be about 80% there. Actually, 5x6 would probably be a better size, and with the money you save put on one of the lock and swivel hitches instead of a regular ball.

And if BMT ever shows up again ask him how he likes towing his 3/4 ton M101 trailer with his 80. The good thing about the bigger military trailers like the M101 is that they are less popular, and hence usually cheaper than the little M416s.

I know people have got trailers from those Auctions. In fact-- I think Guderian bought a trailer through one--but his was an M416.

But I wouldn't buy that trailer-- that is the bigger 1.5 ton-- I said this before, and somone correct me if I am wrong, but I think those are way to big to be towed by an 80-- even on road.

I did buy my M416 through to govliquidation site. $-wise, not necessarily the best deal. Their auctions aren't like e-bay with a fixed close time, more like a true auction that as long as there is bidding, the auction continues. I got mine for ~$430?, but had to rent a u-haul trailer, hitch up to the FJ60 and drive to San Diego and back in one day with a M416 sitting in a u-haul double axle trailer. Between gas $, wire wheels and paint, a new leaf spring, new lights, parts, etc. etc, I'm sure I was close to $7-800. Great trailer though. Will go ANYWHERE your truck will. I'm thinking more along the lines of a pop-up for my family camping now, though. Sold the M416 with my 60 this past spring. :frown:
