As some of you know, I have a 5 month old Pudelpointer named Abe, that I'm currently training for versatile hunting (retrieving, tracking, pointing, etc). I'm looking for some land where I can do some training. Technically, they don't allow dog training on gamelands (although I've not been chased off yet) and I am resigned to my back yard for the most part.

What I'm looking for:

Some decent sized fields. Could be as small as a couple acres even.
Hopefully in Wake county on the S or E side, but that's getting really picky
A pond or ponds would be ideal
I'll need to be able to shoot guns - could be blanks, ideally I'd be allowed to shoot some pen-raised birds

Obviously I'd be fully respectful of the land and not use it in any way I don't have permission, and leaving it as good or better than when I step foot on it. I'd be open to paying a modest access fee or other forms of barter I might could provide.

If you know of anything, even if it doesn't necessarily meet the above criteria, please let me know.

Thanks!

Ramon

Ramon, the Army Corps of Engineers manages the Jordan Dam and land around it, including game lands. Not sure if this would work for you (and I don't know the hunting regulations). If you walk across the dam, there are many acres of open land, some of it game land. I've found the rangers/Army staff there very helpful, may be worth a trip to the Visitor Center at the dam to talk with them (down Hwy 1 and take the Moncure exit).

Thanks Joe. Gamelands is what I've been using up and around Jordan Lake, mostly up around 751 and Ferrington Rd (N of 64). The problem is that dog training is actually allowed on public gamelands. I really need to be able to do some shooting, and ideally be able to shoot pen-raised birds... which would draw more attention to my presence. All that is legal on private land, but not the areas you speak of :( But, I do appreciate the reply!

Ramon, I have the perfect spot for you. 40 acres of open hay fields and a pond BUT it is in Marshville, NC about 2.5 hours from Cary. Probably not worth it. Let me know if it is and I'll hook you up.

That might come in handy for some specific "change of venue" opportunities down the road. Will keep you in mind and REALLY appreciate the offer.
