As the title says, I am looking for help getting my 1965 FJ40 to run nicely with the Holley Sniper EFI autolite 1100. I have the sniper installed and the engine fires up. However it is running crazy rich and I have no idea what I'm doing with getting the ol' girl to settle down. It seems like I'm chasing my tail with changing the timing and changing the sniper settings.

I'd be happy to pay for your time in beer, food, or $$.

Thanks for the help.

Set all the base settings like displacement, cyl count, desired AFR, and set your base timing around 9 degrees. Follow instructions on holley’s YouTube video about setting the IAC.

I’ve also seen clogged fuel pressure regulators due to not cleaning out fuel lines when making and installing them

Most important thing. Make sure your ignition system is all working properly. What distributor are you running?

I'll look into the setting of the IAC a little more and check out that youtube video. Thanks.

Some of my confusion with timing comes into play with my distributor. I have the original vacuum advance distributor. I set my timing with the vacuum advance line disconnected and the lines plugged but when I hook it back up, everything seems to need readjustment or it's not running correctly. By the time I readjust settings, it's running way too rich again.

Couple of minor items - from someone who had to take his EFI’d FJ40 back to @Trollhole to get it right.

Timing - can;’t give you specifics, but get it set & tighten.
Make sure your points and rotar are clean
Open & clean the inside of the dizzzy cap - just in case.
Re-flash the software
Confirm fuel pressure; i replaced the original fuel pump, and new pump was pushing too hard.
Swap the O2 sensor; just in case
Double check the vacuum plug on the inboard bottom of the throttle body, inboard of the fuel supply.
If all else fails - contact the guys at @Trollhole - and pony up to get them on it

I can’t stress enough how important a good ignition system is. Without good spark, unburned fuel makes it to the exhaust. The ECU sees that as rich and tries to compensate when it’s actually getting the correct amount of fuel (or at least close).

Is your distributor a stock ‘65 unit? That would be vacuum retard and not advance. Good points gapped to .018” and a strong coil? Fresh cap and rotor? Clean plugs gapped to .032-.035 and fresh wires?

The engine was a strong runner with the original SD40 carb. I have good spark, correct gap, fresh wires, fresh cap and rotor, and Pertronix electric ignition along with a pertronix flame thrower coil.

I may be wrong but based on coolermans website and some research, I'm pretty positive the distributor is vac advanced. Again, could be wrong.

When I first started the engine with the holley sniper, it ran just fine. A tad rich but nothing out of the ordinary. I'm thinking it has more to do with the timing and when I reconnect the vacuum advance line.

Fuel pressure? Are you using the internal fuel pressure regulator or the remote GM one? Disconnect vac advance to see if that helps. What is vacuum at idle. Where do you have your O2 tapped in?

I'm using the Walbro GCL611 external fuel pump and the EFI has a factory set fuel pressure regulator set to 58.5 psi.

Is there a way to verify the fuel pressure on the sniper screen? I don't have an external gauge.

I'll check vacuum this weekend and get back to you.

For the O2 sensor, I tapped into the exhaust about a ft after it collects together using the stock manifold:

thanks!

Definitely worth putting an external fuel pressure gauge on. IIRC the O2 sensor should be around 8” from the collector.

I use this Earl’s adapter and pressure gauge… it is always rock steady at 58. This is my 2nd gauge…after the first hour or so of running the original gauge popped the glass and the oil filled case drained onto the block. Holley exchanged it quickly. My O2 sensor is 6” from the three bolt flange after the header and up about 15* from horizontal]
