My freind's wife's FJ80 was experiencing a multitude of starting problems. we got the cranks-but-won't-start symptom fixed with a new EFI relay. Now we're down to the sometimes-won't-crank-at-all symptom. I'm guessing that one is related to the starter contacts (over 160k miles on the original starter). Is there an online how-to that can show me how to do this repair?

Thanks!

Eric,

This is a common maintenance item on Toyotas. The parts are cheap via Cruiserdan or your local dealer. You'll need to know which starter is in the truck (they came with 3 different types) and if you peek under and get the p/n (it's on a metal tag IIRC) then C-Dan can tell you which starter you have. The p/n information is also in the archives but it's probably not in the Slee article.

If this type of repair is new to you then I would suggest you search on "starter contacts" in the 80 section as you will get a lot more information. If you've done a starter before then the above article will be all you will need.

Good Luck and post back if you have any problems.

You guys are making this way too hard. Just pull the starter, take out the contacts and go down to your local parts store. They have a selection and can get the right contact, they're like less than $5.00 or something. It takes all of an hour.

except that you are forgetting that most of these guys use their 80's as dd. so pull the starter and you go no where. lol, sometimes it helps to have the parts on hand first.

Just noticed your sig. Your wife's truck is named DD? Cool. :D
