Before I order one online does anyone know a local place in Los Angeles that sells a 54mm Socket? I was planning on trying to do my driver side wheel bearings this weekend but overlooked a critical tool needed to complete the job . Any help would be appreciated I am near Venice/Marina Del Rey.

Thanks,

^ Got mine off a Snap On truck for about $23.

I use a 3/4" drive with 1/2" adapter 2-1/8" socket from Sears. HF probably has them too.

Places like Autozone, O'Reilly's should have them. You may even be able to rent it for free.

2-1/8" socket from Tractor Supply does the trick.

Thanks I will have to look for a 2 1/8" as I was only looking for a 54mm. Probably could have done that math and figure that might be an option. I could not find a 54mm when I was out looking this morning.

Try the Snap On website. Bought mine for less than $20.00 and think that included shipping. 2 1/8" = 54mm.

Socket, Axle Nut, 54 mm

Stock #: ANS1900B , 2 1/8" x 3/4" drive about $22.00.

^What he said. The last three front toyota solid axles I tore down (54MM noots)were about one turn tighter than hand tight. Go cheap or go home on this one. Snap-on sells some of the best tools on earth (I'm a Cornwell guy myself though:doh:), but your not gonna need the best tool on the market for this part of the rebuild.

I could not get the northern 2 1/8" socket to fit due to clearance Ended up ordering a 54mm hub socket from amazon.

is this for a front axle removal?

I have not done any kind of tear down or rebuild of my front axle on my 60 so, my guess is, if I ever wanted to do for example, a birf relube or rebuild, I would need this socket or over sized crescent wrench?

Yeah. A birf service requires a full tear down using new seals (buy Marlins kit) and regrease. To me, the hardest part was removing the damn cone washer which hold the hubs on. They were a PITA. The birf was easy to get out. You just have to line it up with the notches and give it a little wiggle, and it should come right out for you. Also remember to keep the shims on the knuckles together and install in the same sequence. Basically, I just throw themto the side and don't remove them from the knuckle. If you mix them up you might have a problem because the shims act as balance and you will need the factory service tool which is about $150 last I heard.

buy one from marlin when you order his heavy duty seals . He sells 54mm socket for 25.00
