Can someone let me know what I should be looking out for on these rigs? I just restored a '66 mustang fastback from the ground up so I not a nob when it comes to restoring things or working with my hands, but I have no experience with them. Where do they typically rust at, frames issues, other rust issues? Parts dealers to go with? Can you swap out tops from a middle 60's one for a later model with any mods?

I've had multiple jeeps but always wanted a FJ.

Thanks,
Danno

Welcome to Mud!

If you look at the first page in the 40 section, at the top you will see FAQs. It is a sticky at the top of the section. If you click on that, there is a ton of info including this thread about purchasing an fj40 - https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-seri...j-40-fj-40-b-u-y-e-r-s-g-u-i-d-e-***-f-q.html.

There is a ton of info on this site. Do some research and then ask some specific questions and we'll see what we can do to answer them. If you find a 40 that you want to purchase, post up some pics and we can help walk you through what to look for.

Good luck!

difference

there are quite a few diffs between the years and often things will not swap straight over w/o work but some will

Clear as mud?

Early models are said to have better metal but later models will save you mods like

Power steering
disc brakes
Air Con
4 speed tranny/ floor shift

Later model 74 and up engines are said to be better due to the oil sys

Engines are 1F, 1.5 F ( this is the 74 1F with an upgraded oiling system) and 2F

The 2F is slightly larger with a better oiling system and prolly easier for parts

Hope that is a start for you

Firt of all, thank you for answering the thread.

I need one that can hold 6 people which is why I'm looking for one that has three along the front and 2 seats on the rear wheel wells. From what I can tell, the 60's years had them only correct?

I did check out the FAQ and missed a few areas to look at. I will bring the checklist with me along with a digital camera.

Thanks for the help.

i can't imagine 6 people in a 40. i find it hard to believe 4 people in one. i would look into a pig or something with a little more room.

saw it many times when my son had his '73. 4 people in the back on the early jump seats. Looked like the seats came out of a bus. I took them out of my '71 , I wanted the 2 seater sports model.

you need a 60's fj40 friont bench seat with a rear bench seat...something like a con-fer rear seat...or from a mini van.

search this site for "rear bench seat"

Still you cannot what so ever fit 6 peoples in a 40. You can remove a 40 off your list, If you like the body style of the 40 search for the long wheel base FJ43,BJ44,FJ45.

The early 40s, like my `68, with the long jump seats and no roll bar were listed as a 7 passenger vehicle. You had 3 on the front bench and 4 in the back, 2 on each jump seat.

Thats just not true. I put six adults in mine last 4th of July for the trip to the fireworks. No one was comfortable, but for short trips its doable.

Stock front buckets and rear jumps.

Would you ride a hour trail of any type with 4 people in the back?

And IMO it is just too dangerous.

Front bench seat = 3 people

Rear bench seat = 3 people

Total = 6 seats ;)

toyota even had there own front and rear benches with early 25's and then with the LX.
Lx's are very nice:

When i say fit, i mean going on a ride for a day. If you don't care at all about confort and security, yeah sure, and maybe you can fit more.

I have a large mini van bench on the rear of my cruiser, my kids do fit there. For a minimum confort i would say 5 max. If you want to fit 4 in the back you need the longer side facing seats that came with the cruiser that didn't have the roll bar....

Telling him that he will enjoy a 40 with 6 people in it is a very bad advise IMHO.

We were answering his question...he needs to fit 6 people...2 adults and 4 kids under 9yrs. and a bench seat in front and one in the rear will do that. ;)

...not bad advise...IMO :)

I guess it is a question or "can or should" To each is own.

Just try to get the 3 kids out of the back seat with a front bench and let me know how you like it, when they all wanna go pee.
