Hi Everyone! Very new here, but wanted to get some thoughts from the forum. My wife and I are looking to upgrade our family camping/adventure vehicle. I have been looking at Lexus gx 460 for awhile and this one popped up at a local dealership. Again, new to all of this, and was curious if this looks like a solid option/price. Also, anything that I should look for specifically when viewing the car. I will attach link below. Thank you for your input!

I may lean towards the "Similar Vehicles" listed at the bottom of the page. The 2014 is only 2 years older, has just about the same miles but is about $8,500 cheaper!
Also, I'd rather purchase a vehicle that is NOT modified, then you know it hasn't been off roaded. I'd prefer box-stock also so I can choose what I want on it.
$8,500 will get you some good mods!

So I’d I were to sell my 460 would you recommend someone not buy it? ;)

Depends what the under carriage looks like. If it were all banged up, probably not. If all the skids looks pretty clean with minor scrapes, I'd give it a thumbs-up!
It's just that many folks out there don't know what to look for.
They'll see this totally stacked (built up) off roader and think to themselves, " Wow! I could go anywhere with that!" without considering just how hard it's been wheeled.
Not a problem, if it has been wheeled hard, just that someone with experience and knows about these things would know better suited of what to look for (regarding damage) and not mind the mods and maybe even some minor dings.

So, the short answer to your question, is I probably would buy your rig. You've never posted any pictures of your rig scraping along boulders or trees, hung up on rocks or having to be winched out of 4 feet of water. All your adventures seem reasonable and I'd know what to look for when examining your rig! 👍

I was being a little facetious, however you are correct that I don’t go beyond dirt roads or flat-ish grass fields to get to a campsite. I do plan on replacing the factory skids with something thicker IF I keep the rig. I’m contemplating selling it this year or early next year.

Hop on the main GXOR Facebook group and the one for the Oregon area and see if there’s anyone there that has info on it. I’ve seen it before but don’t know who owned it.

I would run away from a rig like that. The accelerated wear of steering/suspension components with those oversized, heavy, negative offset wheels/tires alone would put me off. Add in all that extra weight of metal bumper, winch, spare tire carrier, ladder, etc. Now you are looking at a vehicle that is coming close to exceeding the GVWR.

The Lexus GX is not designed to carry all that extra stuff. I get that people do it. 1400lbs+ adds up quick.

Land Cruiser Prados that the GX is based on have been carrying this sort of gear or similar weight in equipment all over the world in places harsher than most of the US. I’m pretty confident in the ability of the GX to be able to adequately handle all this kit.

Now if the owner beat on it and neglected maintenance that’s more of a red flag in my opinion.

I think you missed my point. Just because it "can handle it" does not mean it was designed to. A lot of these overland vehicles go way beyond the parameters of what the engineers intended. I get there is a market for it. Not all of us buy into it.

I might also point out that no matter how you slice it, that vehicles components are not going to last as long as a lighter rig being used in the same conditions. As long as you realize the shortcomings of all that wear and tear then have at it and enjoy.

Modded is usually a hard pass for me. Wheeling hard isn't normally the issue, 90% of people modify for looks and never go off roading anyway.. the issue is people don't know WTF they are doing with lifts, driveline, wiring, etc. Every modded car I ever bought was a bag of problems mostly due to the PO not knowing what they were doing.

To OP, I would buy an older less expensive one. from 2010+ its literally all the same vehicle. Newer models have more gadgets/tech but the engine/trans are 100% identical and they are ALL reliable as hell to 300, 400k miles.

Just to pipe in, aside from all that extra weight a Prado may be loaded down with, those Prado's do it all over the world with either a 4 banger diesel or 6 cylinder petrol.
With all due respect, I truly believe that the Prado's (and GX's) are built for rugged work with added weight. Why else would it be a "body on frame" design? If they were planning on it being strictly a soccer Mom car, they would have changed it over to a uni-body like the Nissan Pathfinder.
I wouldn't build a newer Pathfinder (the original were body on frame), Jeep Renegade or even those new Ford Maverick's the same as my GX because they're uni-bodies and would probably twist and torque like crazy with some of the stuff I've done.

100% agree.

Unless you really need it, it's a terrible time to buy a vehicle. 2 years ago, a 2016 GX with that mileage would have been like $30,000.

If you're ok with the price and look, it's worth checking out. I would approach any modified vehicle with caution and really dig into details and vehicle condition before buying. The age/mileage and mods on this particular truck give me strong "I threw a bunch of mods I thought were cool onto my Lexus and ruined it" vibes.
Everything hanging off the rear hatch and front bumper/side bars seem primed for NVH problems.

What has me puzzled is why used Lexus GX's with big miles are not much cheaper (and sometimes more) than a new one.

‘Big miles’ is relative. This isn’t an 80’s Ford where you can expect catastrophic failure after 100k. Toyota sets the standard for reliability.

The Boomer-inspired American perspective and subsequent expected devaulation of a vehicle because it has 40k, 80k or 160k miles on it is f’n absurd. If you want cheap at 40k miles, go buy an Audi… and have fun constantly fixing that thing or ignoring problems like most owners.

New and used car market is broken. New car supply is broken because of chip shortages and other supply chain issues. Lack of new cars plus stuff like people moving away from cities drives up demand for used cars. Demand is highest for larger vehicles with AWD/4WD so they have the largest pricing bubble.
Your Lexus dealer may advertise a 2022 GX for MSRP but to get one means paying ADM or waiting for 8+ months, but they have a 2019 with 50,000 miles on the lot right now.

I get the reliability thing. What I don't understand is why anyone would purchase a used vehicle same model and options for more than new. And don't get too warm and fuzzy over a used Toyota. When purchasing used (even with a mechanics inspection) you are rolling the dice. The GX 460 is no different than any other used "reliable vehicle".

Example of pricing in todays market: 2020 GX 460 Premium with almost 10,000 miles on the clock 63,000.00. Brand new 2022 GX 460 Premium 59,000.00. I have been pricing this segment of vehicle for over a year now and see this time and time again. Also dealers are willing to deal much more on certain new vehicles as they are not having to recoup what they already overpaid on used.

The GX 460 is not a high demand vehicle. They are readily available. Still, the prices are more than I am willing to pay. Not to mention I'm patient and do not "need a vehicle". I'm also waiting for the new Sequoia to come out and compare.

This is not true at all. Lexus dealers here in Southern CA almost always have a few new GX460's on the lot. ADM's at Lexus dealers are far and few between. As I stated in my last post the GX460 is not in high demand.

The broken market conditions apply across the board. A lot of the used prices are dealers shooting their shot (compare Carmax to a local dealer) but over here in the mid Atlantic new vehicles are still few and far between.

Wow, thanks everyone for your comments, they are super helpful. I think that looking at a cheaper option that is more stock and doing things at my pace/cost is the route to go. Also, not getting a car that has been possibly beat up.
I am going to go look at this gx today. I understand that the market is crazy right now, but with two dogs and a 1 year old we need more room and I am trading in a car that is basically straight across as far as money goes.

I hate to ask again, but anything to look for when I check this car out/does it seem like a good option on paper? Thanks again for all the replies, this new guy really appreciates all of the thoughtful responses.
