Looking at a 2000 LC, is my offer fair?

I am finally getting around to getting into a 100 series and have found one just a tad over a hour away from me which is practically impossible normally.

It has 182k, timing belt service done, starter replaced, from the pictures it looks great, says no rust and always garage kept (they have a huge house and like a 4 or 5 car garage)

All records whatever that means, I go to see it this next weekend and will most likely purchase it just figured what you guys think about my offer.

They are asking 10,200 I would be willing to offer about $9600 cash which I think is more in line with my situation since I have to add taxes, title, insurance etc and wanted to stay close to 10k drive away.

Its white in color and looks very clean interior and exterior. I can't wait to see it this weekend hoping it lives up to my expectations.

sounds fair to me. in CA I usually see this year going for 10-14k

Yea I am pretty good with prices on 100's after looking for so long at least in respect to east coast ones, I know out west there is the premium for good ones.

$10.2k seems like a good deal. They could probably get close to that on trade at a dealer if it's clean.

Well we will see on Friday when I go how clean the truck is with maintenance and visually/mechanically and then discuss price. I may pay asking if its "that good" Just figured I would start down lower to see what the response is and then go from there.

I was told most ppl that looked at it are put off by the mileage. If the records and maintenace are what I hope they might be I told them I don't mind the mileage. They seem to be keen on holding out for my purchase since they listed on Craigslist June 11th and never relisted it since then.

I'll report back on Friday night what is up.

That's a fair price. KBB bottoms out depreciation due to mileage around 150K.

I wouldn't sweat the mileage if maintenance has been done. Was the water pump replaced? Just had mine done w/the timing belt and I was surprised that it had been leaking. Also, check that brake fluid has been changed as the master cylinder is another big $ item to replace! Check underneath for leaks.

Was timing belt done at 90K and 180K ? If it was only done at 90K you could use that for a little leverage. I agree with you, start a little lower and work your way up on the offer. There is not a ton of people willing to spend that kind of money on a 14 year old vehicle. That worked in my favor when I got my 100.

Thanks for all the advice.. I am assuming they just did the timing belt and water pump type service at 180 k or so. But hey I could be wrong but since its not more than 15 minutes from my sisters house which is close by I figure why not stop and drive it and get the whole story and see the records.

Actually waiting on the father to call me tonight supposedly. I am heading to my sisters area on Wednesday so am trying to get them to let me come Wed evening which would be easier then making a separate trip just for that.

Hopefully he doesn't tell me "o yea we did the timing belt at 90k" guess I'll find out anyway on the phone.. update later

Is NEPA (North Eastern Pennsylvania?) an NADA or KBB area?

Many dealers use these as a guide depending on the area.

Well I looked up KBB at least and its about 10k-10,200 in Good to Very Good Condition so I would be willing to pay that if the maintenance (timing, water pump, regular belts, fluids, bushings, cv joint boots, exterior, interior all check out. Father (owner) is calling my cell this morning so I can get more detail before I got tomorrow evening to drive it.

UPDATE:
Talked to the owner (father) about a hour ago and got the following initial details.

Good news: 2nd Owner since 20k miles bought from Lexus dealership, has a stock of records 1" thick or so. Always garaged kept, front seats look like a vehicle with half the mileage or less

Not so great news: timing belt/water pump service he said was like 120-130k miles which still gives me if confirmed in person (sticker in engine bay) some miles left to go yet though not as much as originally though. Guy sounds really cool and used to have a 96 and then sold that for the 2000 he has now.

This is Austin's 100 in Bucks, right? (I think Austin is the son).

I called on this rig a few minutes after it posted on CL and talked to him later the next day. It only has 182K? For some reason, I recall it having more miles (closer to 200K). It is definitely clean.

actually yea I typo'd it was 192k, and yes Austin is the son Dave is the dad.

This will be your first 100?
yes just had my 94 before this for 4.5 years

It would only be driven about 5-6k a year and I have some saved for catch up maintenance if needed

Personally I think 192k is a lot of miles for $10k particularly if it will need any expensive service items which it likely will. Unless you're dead set on this one or he's willing to negotiate, I'd keep looking.

Well I meet up to see and drive tomorrow at 5pm so we'll find out how low hes willing to go. We'll see what happens.

$10k too much? It's really all relative; if you like the truck checks out, looks clean, good tires, etc., etc., etc. then it probably isn't too much. When I bought my 80 in 2003 I may have paid "too much" ($10,000) but now after 11 years and 200,000 miles later (it's over 300,000 now) and good maintenance, it's still going strong, so whose to say if I paid too much? However, my 100 w/134xxx miles I DID pay too much for since I've had to replace the MC, water pump and timing belt, front axle boots, etc., etc.
Just check it out and maybe $10,000 isn't too much. Just my verbose $.02 of course.

UPDATE:

Just got home from all day out with the last appt being looking at the LC and driving it. It was that good I put a deposit on it and pick it up next week.
Pristine was a pretty good word from the ad to describe it, no rust underneath I mean it looked a few years old.

Outside and inside were 9/10's and it smelled fresh and all, tested every accessory and they work including A/C. Drove great no problems there.
His stack of records was crazy and apparently there was a mis understanding over the phone but the whole timing belt/water pump service was done at 172k not 120-130k I saw the work papers. It has 196k now but hey that is no biggie with all the service records this guy had. He did most of the work himself and knew all about LC's. Tune up was also done at 172k.

I asked him how many people contacted him and he said about 5... one guy wanted to export to Africa and another wanted it really cheap. I was the only one to go see it and drive it.

Got him to agree to $9800 which was fine after seeing and driving and seeing the big service done only about 20k ago.
All the ball joints/bearings/bushings were mostly all done already.
Tires were all matching of course and 70% tread.
CV boots looked new, no grease stains anywhere, radiator is only about 50k old
Last thing the manifolds leaked way back and he fought to get them replaced by Toyota and ended up paying 500 and they covered the rest or something along those lines

Asked if he ever had any issues with tranny said no it's serviced by the dealer recently and it's original so fingers crossed there haha

I am psyched to pick it up next week. Will post some pics then in the ol driveway.

Cheers all
