I'm looking at a 2000 100 series with 209k miles. It has some minor body damage, but I'm not too worried for the price. What concerns me is that he mentioned some sort of issue with the drivetrain. It won't drive without the CDL switch engaged and he doesn't have time to investigate. Any idea what it could be?I'm planning to check it out in person, but I'm not familiar with the 100s.

Sounds like a broken front diff.... Run!

I would bet it is the front drive flanges over the diff if he said nothing of crazy noises. If is local to you I will be willing to go look at it with you if you want. I will be in Bentonville Monday night.
Thanks I appreciate that. I will message you.

"My sister was driving it and said she heard a clunk when she pulled out of the gas station and it wouldn't move"
He says no strange noises or grinding sounds. It will move with CDL engaged...
Does this sound like a diff blowing up?

Sounds more like drive plates <guess ....chances are if it was the front dif there would be binding, at least in the beginning.:hillbilly: Unless you are knowledgeable on the working of the system I would have it checked out prior to purchase. Front diff can be a $2000 or more fix.

Drive it while turning. If it's the diff, you'll know. Driving straight down the road with a busted front diff doesn't always reveal itself. But when turning it will. Drive flanges are easy to check. If the truck is cheap, like really cheap, a busted front diff isn't a deal breaker. ARB front locker new ring and pinion and you're swt

Wonder what really cheap would be? It needs a pax side front fender, but evidently it was owned by this person since 40k and serviced at the local Toyota shop. Going to check it out and will report my findings... Appreciate everyone's input as always, thanks!

Besides the obvious issues and body damage. What else is potentially wrong with this truck? It's got over 200k and probably needs thousands worth of neglected maintenance. If he didn't fix this issue there could be a long list of other badly needed repairs.

Check out the maintenance records from the Toyota dealership to see what may be needed.

Service records are good, but will need a timing belt in about 20k miles. Oil was changed every 5k. New rear brakes a couple years back. He didn't know what was wrong with the driveline. I drove it today (turned fully lock to lock)and no strange noises or vibrations/binding with the CDL engaged. When I de-selected CDL the front driveshaft just spun like it wasn't connected to anything and the truck wouldn't go. Interior was a little dirty, but everything works. Any advice on what it's worth?

For sure it's worth $4k. Drive flange is like $200. Junk yard fender is another couple hundred. Clean and detail it yourself. When fixed, it's worth a quick $7500 easily. As long as you're not sinking thousands into it, it would be fine.

I am trying to understand what is going on when the CDL is unlocked. Since this locks the center diff, why aren't the rear wheels turning when unlocked?

Ahh. Got it.

My guess is drive flange. I broke my diff and could not move even with the CDL locked. The broken teeth will find a way into the gears. It will also act as if you were slamming the truck into neutral and drive. Pop the dust cap off and check for metal shavings. Keep them off and have somebody watch the end of the CV shaft.
