Looking @ a 1991 Toy 4x4 pickup w/ 22RE - how durable?

wow, this turned into a F vs. R battle. I think the F wins, my 3F-E is what I call a fuel injected tractor engine. Its build quality is just so good, its way better than any other gasoline inline 6 I have seen. Espically better than the jeep 4.0L's!!
Not a powerhouse, but just very durable. I have never owned a R series engine, but have herd good things here on the boards.
I would be happy with both.

As for this threads origional question, if you spot a rust free toyota, jump on it!
 
I am no fan of the F models. Try to rev the piss out of it when you need it and you will throw a rod. My 40 went through 2 factory 2fs within 60k miles. That was DD and NO abuse. I bought it after the engine had been replaced the first time. After a couple thousand miles the oil pump shelled and spun a bearing. This was with regular oil changes (documented from the dealer). They are a over designed engine and there are a lot of people that love them. Maybe I just had bad luck with them.
I would assume there are more high mileage 22rs running around with 250k+ miles than f series with that kind of mileage. I think it is pretty cool that my 4skin with 200K can push 37s at 80 mph. My 40 couldn't even do 80 stock. Maybe I am just a pessimist.
 
I totally agree that the argument is moot, these engines are very different in design and application, so you really can't compare them.

I still prefer working on the R-series though! :)

That pic is from a friends '86 4Runner. He bought it (new) in Canada, so it was all in kms. This was a few months before he finally got rid of it (rust attacked the frame), so it had even more on it by then. Other than a timing chain at 100K, this engine was NEVER OPENED. Not even a valve adjustment. And, it still had the original factory clutch in it.

521,621 kms = 326,013 miles

Let's see a 2F do THAT.
my 22re had 306k miles when i replaced the engine. running on 3 cylnders, and lost the front crank seal after a day of mudding. decided i wanted a new engine with a warranty.
 
My 86 22R has 300k miles on it, and the only reason I'm doing a top end rebuild is the stock plastic timing chain guides finally broke about 12 miles ago.

I know I should have replaced them a couple months ago when I got the truck >.<

Anyway, the engine and truck are both f*cking bullet proof.

The F motors will never be and aren’t designed to be high revving. They are long rod (7.5” :eek:), long stroke (4.4” :eek:) grunt, torque motors. There is no “need” to rev them, max torque is at 1800 rpm and max hp 3600 rpm, after that they just make noise. “Revving the piss out of” or operating a motor outside of it’s designed power band is one of the quickest way to destroy it, by definition abuse.

Your argument is like saying the motor in a John Deere is junk because it won’t rev 4000 rpm. F motors are related to tractor motors in that they are heavy slow motors. A properly running F motor is a pleasure to wheel. Big heavy flywheel, crank, rods, etc make it almost stall proof, roll the tire up to a rock, let out the clutch, the motor ticks over at very low rpm, dragging the beast over the rock.:cool:
