It seems that delrin, even if immersed in gear oil, is not an ideal long-term wear surface. Maybe I'm wrong there - but for those with part-time kits, has anyone ever opened up their case to see how loosey goosey the front output shaft is after any significant mileage?

Unlike common plastics Delrin is an engineering material. In general it is is known to be an extremely tough material with very good abrasion resistance. According to DuPont product literature it is resistant to petroleum based lubricants and fuels.

Performance in a specific application will depend on factors like surface finish of the mating parts, misalignment, loads, rotation speed, temperature....etc.

Instead of using a reinforced rubber driveline coupling for a hydraulic pump we made Delrin inserts to fit on a gear. The Delrin parts were the actual gear teeth.

My last endeavor we used Delrin for the hobbed gears on our lens drives. Lasts for decades.

If the part in question is a thrust washer, Torlon (the material for the "all plastic engine") is an excellent choice.

We used Torlon thrust washers in planetary power shift transmissions for earth movers. Loads on the washers were high.
