I just bolted a new Long Range fuel tank to my 1982 FJ40.
I am retaining the factory under-carriage front tank.
I am also routing a 2.5" exhaust as part of my diesel swap.
The exhaust starts in the traditional 2F spot : Under the left side running board.

I was wondering if anyone could post pictures of their longrange tank & exhaust routing? The install documentation is really sparse!:o

I suppose the overall question is where the exhaust *exits* the vehicle.

Option #1
It *looks* like LongRange intended the exhaust to exit the right-hand side of the vehicle, between the tank and the spring?
This is just a guess.
The tank appears to be offset to the left (unless I screwed up the install).
- Easier to fit a muffler, more pipe protection, but more pipe length and more heat into the cabin.

Option #2 Loop the exhaust in and out of the left spring arc.
Shorter pipe, saves some room for a water tank or other storage between the 2 tanks.

Rchandler,
thanks for the posts. My setup is a bit different: I am SOA and I am running 35" tires.
Also, your nice rig is a 66, so your front tank is in the cabin, mine is below and in the area where your muffler sits. You your end pipe placement looks great, but I am worried about getting my pipe crushed when the rear tire comes off rock ledges.

I will post some pictures this evening.

exhaust route

hey

here is a pic of my exhaust on the 82 with a 3B. it is a straight pipe with a resonator? the exhaust exits right in front of back passenger tire. it is supported at the tip end by running boards and rubber floater that are not there in the photo. this will allow you're aux tank and no rock smashy as it is above frame.

Anyone else have a picture of a late model 40 with a long range tank?

Don't have a pic at this time, but if you are installing a Toyota "B" series engine the exhaust will be on the RH side. I use stock Toyota front and center pipe, cut the center pipe and install a muffler (inlet and outlet inline). The stock center pipe is designed to route outside the frame rail and then turns in between the right rear spring and the frame. I cut it off just behind the hanger where it turns to hook up to the stock muffler (which sits right where you want to install the tank) and put on an elbow and a tail extension to take it out behind the right rear wheel between the spring and frame again. Don't let it stick out under the frame or body panels or you will flatten it in the rocks. My muffler is in about the same position as bluerock's. I found that exiting the exhaust ahead of the rear tire meant I was breathing more diesel fumes than I like.

I have an aux tank that I got out of a parts truck. Could someone take a picture that shows how the tank is mounted.
Mine has one rod on either side of the tank. Looks like it was mounted through the floor of the tub. (Not the way I want it mounted).

Here's what I did - I like that it is tucked up above the frame rails and exits in the back so as not to asphyxiate any backseat passengers - just those in following rigs. I would also suggest trying to keep inside the frame rails to keep your options open if installing sliders;)

Thats almost exactly how mine was when I had the Confer tank installed.
