Long and short stock skid plates?

I have an short skid plate on 2 of my land Cruisers(71 FJ40, 74 FJ55) when was the longer skid plate used? I now have 3 short and one long.
Please have mercy on this non newb with a newb type question.

The longer skid plate has a long section on one side where the short does not

Hi All:

Does your '74 FJ55 have a J30 three-speed tranny?

I think you are referring to the difference between the skid plates that came with the three-speed and four-speed transmissions.

My Fj55 has a 4 speed and a short skid plate and my FJ40 had a three speed but it didnt have a skid plate so I bought a short one.
There are two in the newest FJ55 I bought a month or so ago.

iirc, the 55 skid plates are wider than the fj40 skid plates. also, iirc, the pig and the three speed were flush on the end and i think teh 4 speed 40 had a piece that extended a bit. or maybe it's clearanced for teh driveshaft...can't remember...been too long since i've seen one
