Went out this past Saturday with a couple of guys to a local trail to test my front and rear locks. All I can say is WOW!!!! Being locked is a whole other world.

I have a whole new respect for my rig-not only did it kick ass on the climbs-, it also handle my stupid(rookie wheeler) mistakes and kept running. At the start of the trail there was a huge rock I had to climb which I had never done before-so I got a little nervous and locked the front and rear but forgot to go into 4low :mad: needless to say I pushed a little to hard and got an AT temp light on :whoops:-was lucky I didn't break a birth. Once I went into 4low(thanks James) I gunned it a little to hard and overheated the engine :whoops: and almost ran my spooter over . Well needless to say I have gotten my dumb ass mistakes out of the way and won't do that again. My rig on the other hand handled everything like a champ and didn't even groan.

Can't wait to take it out again.

Hey Vic,
I am glad to hear your truck did well! Sorry I couldn't make it out there w/ you guys. My back went out on me and the doc stated not to go out and do any activities. Hopefully, we'll be able to go to Azusa now that it has opened back up in a week or so. Let me know the next time you plan to go out on the trails.

Steve

hmmm....
Congrats on the lockers!
Not to rain on your parade, but is it normal that you'd get all these temp alerts just for going over some rocks?
didn't happen to me nor in other rigs I rode in so far...
something worth checking?

Glad to hear you like the lockers. However, you have cooling problems!!!! Fix them ASAP.
Cheers,
Sean

Thats what I thought initially that I had cooling problems, but I got back to normal temps after my initial mistakes. I'm thinking it was the fact that I was gunning on 4low when I was pushing up that rock. When I got back home I was able to check the rad and it was properly topped off no coolant leakage. I wasn't able to see any other leak.

Vic, how was it out there this weekend? Did you get to do lots of the optional trails? Any pics yet?

was good, no pics I forgot my camera. We went off on an optional trail that hadn't been used in years, got out on the side of Palmdale. Excellent experience and adventure.

Biff, I've noticed in a few of your posts that you are referring to something called a "birth." Is this some inside joke, or are you mistakingly calling a "birf"(short for birfield) a "birth"? Just curious.

Drop the location Victor, some of us "other" socal's would like to check these trails out maybe...

Congrats on the lockers!

Biff, your temp guage should not climb at all while climbing rocks and obstacles. Check out some of the overheating threads.
Cheers,
Sean

Being lazy and cutting birfield to birth. Thats all.

The location was Rowher Flats up by Santa Clarita. The main entrance was closed so we had to around and find another entrance.

As far as the overheating- I was seriously gunning the engine in 4high and front and rear locked, then I gunned the engine again in 4low locked front, center and rear. So I severly stressed the engine in a short period of time. As I said I checked the radiator fluid is topped off, check all hoses no cracks or leaks. Anything else I should check? After this I was lucky I didn't f up anything.

If your fan clutch is going bad, and not engaging the fan often enough, you will overheat without ever losing fluids. That's just on e of many scenarios. Gunning the engine as you describe should not raise the temp gauge...not even a little. When the factory temp gauge on these starts to rise, you are WELL on your way to overheating. Get it checked out...

Garth,

I just replaced the fan clutch a few months ago. But I'll defientely check it out. Thanks for the advice.

Victor - didn't you overheat after playing in the mud in Gorman a couple of months ago too?

Yep thats were I messed up my fan clutch :crybaby: no more mud for me. So my fan clutch works perfect. But just in case I'll double check it. I haven't overheat ever since then, until this situation.

Aaaahhh, your radiator is probably packed with mud between the fins... quite common among the mudders...

The solution is to pull the rad.

A stop-gap is to push water through the back of the rad, towards the front...

You are correct, its was seriously packed with mud, but I cleaned it out. I cleaned it out as much as I could.

I agree you've got a cooling issue unless you're saying you just now found the rad fins packed and just now cleaned them? (as opposed to having found them packed with mud earlier?). You should not be able to so much as move the needle when climbing an obstacle. Keep in mind the truck's not really working as hard as you think because in low range you've essentially cut the work the engine must do in half.

Doug,

The rad was cleaned out a few months ago. So you are saying even if I put the engine through severe stress 4500-5500 rpms it shouldn't effect anything. Like it said I was running pretty high rpms in 4HIGH for two minutes-front and rear locked. Then I put it in 4low and continue running high rpms. I'm just curious if this is considered(stressing the engine).

Why is it I'm thinking that CDan is about to sell a new radiator to Biff? :D Seriously Victor, you have a problem here. I have seen other 80s tortured for hours on end in tight trails and rocks and have never seen the guage even budge. You can either replace the radiator or the motor. Your choice.
