Andrew, just the conclusion I was trying to get Biff to come to all by himself. But is being very reluctant.

Another reason why mud is evil :flipoff2:

I recall another norcal guy who played in mud one day and started having issues with overheating...swore he got all the mud out -- worked on it several times.

You got mud somewhere still...if not, you've got something else going on that's causing you to overheat.

Thanks guys I highly aprpeciate all the comments and information. I'm going to look into the rad and fan clutch.

Victor,

I hate to say it but you need to pull that RAD and soak it, soak it good and long. Maybe a sprinkler would work best. With the rad in the truck it is very hard to get to all the fins thorugh the front or back... I was able to remove my fans and get her good from the back... ahh the rad that is. But even on that last Big Bear trip with Silvercruiser, we both got a bit warm. I'd try to pull the rad and see what you've got, worse case like some one said it's new rad or heads/headgasket time for you...

Does the FSM cover removing the rad? I might have to do that. Thanks for the info Matt?

Biff,

I've pulled 2 80 rads in the last 3 months with excellent advice from others here on huge time savings. Do a search.. And if you need belts/hoses/thermostat/phh, now's the time.

Victor:

Where is this rock on the Rowher flats trail? Did you guys enter from the "Bouquet Canyon" side?

Like the others have mentioned, you should exchange the radiator as soon as possible. I wheel mine in AWD low a lot, and never overheated the radiator / transmission. I only know of one other person overheating their tranny (Clownmidget)..............so, with the upcoming summer months, traffic, and excessive use of the AC in the PRK, will definitely result in overheating issues. There are numerous threads on replacing the radiator. The hardest part is the two upper mounting bolts that pass through the front valance.

Had to finish up final touches / prepartion on my 40 for Rubicon, so I missed the run on Saturday. I'm sure James (FirstToy) took some pictures - post them up

Hey Joe,

Yes we entered on the Bouquet Canyon side. The rock was at the start of the trail.

Victor, that's too funny. I'm working on the Bouquet Canyon site doing surveys as most of the canyon as it enters Santa Clarita is slated for development! I'm up there 2-3 times during the week if anyone is interested in some workday outings.

Also, to reiterate what others have beaten to death, make sure your cooling system is working top-notch. You mentioned a lot of stuff but I didn't catch if and how frequently you've changed out the coolant and/or flushed it out of the block and radiator. Coolant is cheap and easy to change out so don't skimp on doing it more often than not - especially under your conditions.

Great writeup about the lockers though! Enjoy!

Thats funny, we got pretty lost when we were up there. Some of the trails we rode had not been traveled in a while. End it up coming out near a construction site. They were nice enough to let us through and open up there gate. As far as the radiator, I flushed it back in December, I installed a little over a year ago.

You installed a new radiator a little over a year ago?? Was it a new Toyota rad?

If so, you may be able to get away with simply removing the fan/shroud and using a repeated sequence of soaking the lower rad fins with Simple Green and hosing out the muck until you no longer get brown water. I have no experience using a pressure washer, but suspect they may be strong enough to trash or actually cut the fins.

So, what about this radiator replacement???

Biff, I found that with all the help on this fine forum, even as a total neophyte, two weeks ago I was able to swap out the radiator on my 80 with absolutely no problems at all. Wait a tick... I did whimp out and remove the entire grill and headlights to get at the damn thing initially. Oh, and then I did resort to using a hacksaw to remove the two rusty-as-hell top bolts. And finally, my local parts guy claimed the OEM bolts with the rubber doo-dad and collar bit were "not available and could not be ordered" RIIIIIGGHHHHT. I never should have tempted fate, shoulda asked CDan to throw these in when I ordered the Rad from him) Best of luck to you. You're in the right spot for help. These guys rock.

Thanks teknomad80, I completely agree with you. If I do need to pull the rad I'll reference posts here and my FSM.

Checked out the rad and you guys were right was only running at 70% effeciency. Went back to the place where I purchased it and they are going to give me a new one because this the one I have is still under warranty.

So not only did my 80 kick ass, it wasn't even at full capacity. DAMMM I love this rig.

Bought it at a local shop down the street from my house. I know the guy that owns it and he has done work on my rig so he let me have it for the wholesale price. I took it down to that shop and he found out it was the rad that was at fault, and it would be replaced under warranty.

dang, we are goooood! If I may say so myself...
Glad you found out before the HG gave way!

If it happens to you, chances are it has already happened to someone else on the forum.

 So it IS a Toyota radiator, but you got it from a local shop and they are replacing it free under warranty? That doesn't sound like a Toyota radiator to me, it sounds like a aftermarket one that's FOR a Toyota, but not made/sold by Toyota.

Yes vehicles with lockers kick a$$, opens up a whole nuther world of wheeling...
