Have you tried putting it in reverse and then moving it into 2 wheel drive?

+1

Put it in reverse, and give it some throttle, that will unwind the gears and let it go back into 2WD. You might have to do it more than once, or back up a ways (with plenty of throttle) if you've been in 4WD for a long time.

Check your shifter linkages - rust and crap can keep you from moving the lever out of 4L. Turn your hubs out if you have them. +1 for bounce on the clutch in reverse and then forward on the tranny, then try the transfer case lever - might take a few tries.

Thanks so much for the reply. The car is in the body shop now but we think the problem is the gear controlling the linkage(sorry dont know the name) needs to be set in the up position other wise the linkage is not controlling 4x4 to 2wd . Somehow we connnected the linkage to the gear on the transfer case incorrectly causing the problem of it bein glocked in 4x4. We will also try the back up method asap. Thanks again for the advise.
