So here I am with my new grease gun and lock-n-lube coupler, greasing all my zerks for the first time ever. I get to the final one, the front-most U-joint, and the coupler won’t fit into the recessed space to reach the zerk. WTF. I found a needle and tried sticking in the zerk but it popped out. Am I doing this wrong? Do I need to get a different tool for this one stupid zerk? I had the wheels on the ground and the AHC In high if it matters.

Iirc, that zerk is angled. That means that it can get out of position. You can try to adjust it, e.g. unscrew it a fraction of a turn to get a better angle.

It did seem angled but my tool was hitting the sides of the joint before even touching the zerk. It sucks.

Lock & lube is too big to fit between the yokes to lube the spiders. Been there and wasted the $$.

Buy an 18" extension hose for your grease gun and use the standard coupler; loosen it first then screw it down onto the zerK, it should stay in place. The benefit of the extra hose is that its long enough to leave the gun laying on the ground while you connect it to the zerk with out the weight the gun pulling it off.

The lock and lube coupler has a larger diameter than a normal grease coupler. You may need to pick up a regular coupler for that one fitting.

I did this for the first time recently and had to find a tip (just the tip) that was a smidge smaller diameter. If you had a lathe/a drill and sand paper you could probably reduce the diameter enough to make it work. I just happened to have a few extra grease gun tips to try.

The Lincoln grease gun I bought came with a coupler but it’s only a little smaller and the reviews were good on the gun but said the stock coupler was trash... thus I bought the Lock n lube which worked great on the zerks it locked on to (didn’t have to raise the vehicle and zerk orientation didn’t matter which was awesome) but I guess I’ll source a thin coupler for the front. You guys have any favorite couplers for the front u-joint, or at least a part number for one that simply fits?

Man this sucks. I also bought that thing too. Thank you for the review.

I’ve never had a problem getting to the zerks with the regular coupler that came on the 3 grease guns I own. Have you tried the one that came with your gun?
I have 12 additional zerks on my truck (8 on the rear links and 4 on my UCAs). I use a lock n lube on them and it works great, but I use a regular coupler on my U-joints.

I had a similar problem, through reading the driveshaft threads someone recommended:

Lincoln Lubrication 5803 Grease Needle Nozzle

I bought it and it's all I use now for the 100.

Is the idea with that adapter that you physically push extended tip thing into the fitting with enough force to keep the grease from simply spitting out the sides? That seems like it would be... difficult.

@suprarx7nut pretty much and it's easier than it seems and works well.

I can however grease all zerks and the 6 uca zerks with regular coupler and flex hose. I have the needle on the mini tube pistol gun.

Do you just jam the needle in the zerk hole and it stays? I have a harbor freight cheapie needle and it pops out.

Ran into the same problem Saturday. I'm going to try grinding down a coupler so it clears.

That is what I did on my grease gun.

I have two 12" flexible hoses coupled together... on the end is which a grease coupler that I ground a 'flat' on two sides (180° apart). It now easily fits into the yoke section of driveshafts.

The length of my hoses allows me leave the grease gun on the ground (if I wish), but more often than not....I just hold the coupler on the zerk fitting with one hand (to ensure it will not come off) and operate the grease gun with the other. Always use a pistol grip type grease gun. If you have a lever type gun....throw it in the trash or give it to someone you don't like.

I have a pneumatic operated gun...for larger projects (tractors and such) but I don't ever use it on the vehicles.

I like it. Thanks flintknapper.

I have the long Lock n Lube coupler and I can use it for the front u joint. I did have to straighten the right angle zerk fitting to get it to point straight down. It's a tight fit, but it works.
