LJ7x Land Cruisers... The easiest way to twist Wayne's tail... :D

Juan

What on earth makes you think I was referring to Wayne?;)

Hello,

Well, this is what usually happens with LJ7x threads:
  1. Someone asks a question, which may or may not be related with the infamous 2L engine head.
  2. The question is answered.
  3. Wayne jumps in to remind us what a huge engineering failure the L Series engines are.
  4. Wayne gets mad in the process.
As you said once, LJ7x issues attract him just like a flame attracts a moth... Hence the "tail wisting" comment. ;)

No offense intended.

On the other hand, having to deal with failing units prone to puking their entrails out without notice must be a real pain. I can understand that.

Juan

PS: Where is your LJ78 now?

You did however leave out items 5 & 6
5. The person who ask the question tells Wayne to be quiet.
6. Wayne gets even madder.:)

I sold the LJ78.....its somewhere out west.
Take care......1978HJ45

I want to thank everyone for your help. I was able to get the steering stabilizer with the part number you provided me.

The parts are being dropped off at my house tonight.

Do any mechanics have some tips to share that I should look out for when fitting in the new suspension?

Any help is appreciated. You guys rock!

P.S. I was visiting Vancouver this weekend and saw at least 5 RHD LJ7x driving around and probably another 15 or so LJ's. Must be a mechanic in Vancouver keeping these suckers alive!...and making some serious $$$ :steer:

No "serious money" in keeping them alive on our end, just the cash output from the owners of these is the serious money.

We charge regular shop rates, at our estimated labour times - costs no more or no less than anything else.

We have done lots of them, and they always come in at about the same cost. The only real variables are the amount of block damage from waiting too long and the need for a rad rebuild or not.

nah, i don't get mad.
in reality i don't care, i don't sell them, i don't sell parts (unless i happen to have stripped one cause of a dead head and the owner finally got sick and tired of dumping $$$$ into it and sold it for dirt cheap) and i HATE working on them.
for some reason i end up with the owners calling me up and whinning away about how great a deal they got it for but how much it costs to fix and do i know anyone that works on them. Cause John loves them so much i refer the owners to him...

the biggest problem i see for the members of the forum here is the owner comes to realize what a money pit these are, they sell to some other sucker who finds their way here and asks the same questions, come to realize they got suckered and sell to another senseless smuck who repeats the process ...

of course as the truck passes from owner to owner it infects the new owner with attitude, self importance and the false hope refered to as "it won't happen to me" itis.

Crushers, I just didn't appreciate you labeling me as a naive owner. Landcruisers have a "bulletproof" reputation surrounding them and I understand a new owners frustrations when the head pulls a "jack-in-the-box" shortly after they purchase it. I am fortunate in the fact that the truck I own already went through the head replacement routine before I bought it. The mechanic (he's a Cruiser fanatic himself) purchased the truck for $1500. The owner had his fun with it and didn't want to sink any money in for the head replacement. So the mechanic put in the new head/timing belt. etc etc and fixed up everything and sold it to me for $6500. I did "pay" for the repair in a sense, but $6500 for the truck with a new head is pretty damn reasonable. I understand it could happen again, but I'm not as concerned as someone who hasn't had the operation done on their truck. Would I purchase one of these trucks without a new head in it? NO...Unless I was my friend who purchased his for $5500. I helped him replace his turbo and also helped him put in a pyrometer (for obvious reasons!).

The truck is 20 years old and I don't expect to get another 20 years from it without having to replace something of large value. I'm having lots of fun with it, and enjoy driving it everyday. I just dropped $900 for the new EMU suspension because I realize the 20 year old suspension just isn't going to perform like it did fresh off the lot 20 years ago. No free lunches.

Another story: My friend bought a used 2005 S60 Volvo. He paid $5000 for it. The car is pretty mint, fully loaded. But only a month after purchasing, the tranny started going and cost him $5000 for the rebuild. He was f'n mad, but he doesn't beat himself up over it and he doesn't run around town telling people not to buy that particular vehicle anymore. The deal he got for the car isn't so sweet anymore but he hasn't lost his shirt. He's now at the $10,000 mark for the vehicle and he is still very happy driving it.

It would be hard for me to find a small diesel SUV such as my Landcruiser for $6500. After I upgrade my suspension and increase the exhaust piping and muffler , I'll still be under the $10,000 mark which is roughly the market value of these trucks.

Crushers, not all of us on here have been burned with these trucks. I do appreciate you raising the awareness of this particular engine. But I think you should be a little gentler in your approaches instead of trying to scare the living daylights out of people and making them feel bad about their purchase.

The truck cost 1500 and you purchased for 6500 after a new head? The figures dont add up.

You'll be happy until the head goes again...if it goes.

The figures don't add up.....You failed to consider inflation, exchange rate, new math versus old math, etc.:)

i am going to guess you bought it from Canyon Creek Toyota, i was looking at it as well for a 1PZ transplant. the mech did the entire rebuild and not just the head (so i was told) and that price was VERY atractive but i passed on it.
for that money, even if the head does go again you are still in the ball park.
i am doing what is required of me, that is all. i am not trying to scare the living daylights out of anyone, i am putting forth the means to remove the rose colored glasses so they will be forwarned and not head off to Hope without some form of backup plan. i have seen too many die on the coqu and rodgers and the hills on #3. it would be negligent of me not to put forth serious warnings.
no, not EVERYONE has been burned but the percentages are in the high 80s or even 90% mark. Dan was selling 2 heads a week when these were first coming in. is there an issue, yes.

but in the end it is the consumers money they are investing and i really do wish yours is one of the ones that makes the next 10 years with no issues.

i know i love the 78 series, i have one here. it is the engine i HATE, poor engineering that NOTHING can correct.

best of luck and peace.

The mechanic bought it from the owner for $1500. I imagine he told the owner what it would cost to get it all fixed and the owner just decided to rid of it. The mechanic fixed the head, timing belt, and performed the necessary mods and other engine work to get the truck back to good working condition. He resold it to me for $6500. He probably profited a couple thousand performing the work himself and then reselling to me. I didn't buy it from Canyon Creek Toyota. I bought in Calgary. Sometimes I get lucky, most of the time I don't :)

i could be mistaken then, often am. maybe the guy said he used to work for Canyon Creek or maybe it is a different truck altogether, either way it is a score for $6500 with all the work done.

Sounds ok actually. By the price of these vehicles now here in Malaysia you got a good deal. They are double ++ here.
