Just bought an LJ71, 87 model, with 2.4l engine, coil springs all around.

I would like to go for an ARB suspension set up for both front and the back, and as such would much appreciate if someone can help me out with the part numbers. Also pls advise a good on line resource for parts as i am a frequent visitor to the US and can hand carry the parts back.

Here are some picture of the truck.

sorry mybad, front is coil spring and back is leaf spring.

I never knew they existed. All the Japanese,European and Australian models were coil sprung all round.

I suspect the rear spring will be the same as a BJ/FJ70

Im kind of surprised they were using the R151f transmission that far back

Rosco, i am not sure how to post more pictures as I am getting a message that I do not have quota to post more pics, else i would have posted pics of the back leaf spring.

Anyway, can you suggest me a good suspension set up that I can purchase in the US? I dont need any lift on it as I need a low center of gravity for rally purposes.

Sajid

Most of the 70 series landcruiser parts ,especially the suspension kits are Australian based.
I think tlccruiserman still sells Dobinsons which make good kits for the LJ7*s

I havent seen a LJ71 with rear leafs ,so 1st you will have to identfy the spring by its length.
Its measured from centre to centre of the eyes.

I suspect you will need half a BJ70 suspension kit and half a LJ70 suspension kit.
Nearly all suspension kits give a 2" minimum lift.
If it is too high, they can be reset.

WHAT A REVELATION: This morning I had a look under the LJ myself and found that indeed there are no leaf springs (-:

Now are there companies in the US / web sites from where I can buy the springs and shocks?

:D Better to find out now than when you try to fit them;)

The mud member in that link lives in California.
Very few ,if any ,will have springs for these in the US . They were not sold in the US and its only recently that Canadians were able to buy them as imports from Japan.
The LJ78 were mainly sold in Japan or Europe new. Australia had a few SWB models from 84-92

Rosco, no kiddig (-:

I have written to various ARB EMU dealers in the US and am awaiting their reply. The member mentioned in this post, the one who lives in Cali seems to carry Dobinson suspension and it is some what more expensive than ARB. Plus i have used ARB in the past and am impressed with its capabilities.

I actually wont mind Rancho 9000 adjustables. Any idea if they are available for LJ71? Perhaps i should write to Ranchos and find out from them.

Also would anyone know where i can buy a performance clutch and some silicone hoses and quality filters? What i really need are part numbers for the filters so that i can search them in US based websites.

RANCHO does make the 5000 and 9000 for the coil sprung LJ.Assuming your car will use the same set up as an LJ78/79 Prado.

Part numbers for the 9000 Front.RS99158 And Rear.RS99144.

You could double check that with the sales people at RANCHO befor you order.

Arjun, thanks for the help. I am trying buy an OME suspension, however if that does not happen any time soon then i will go with Rancho shocks. Any recommendation for springs?

Also anyone tried a dual shock set up?

Guys, I am trying to place an order with ARB USA and they are asking me if both the rear shocks are same? I think they are, but cannot confirm since i am here in the US and my vehicle overseas..

Any advise on that?

If you are going with ome i would suggest to stick with the springs they recommend...

Both rear shocks???????? you mean left and right..they would obviously have to be the same right??

Arjun, I am sticking to what ARB is recommending as far as springs and shocks are concerned. And yes ARB Australia has confirmed that indeed the right rear shock is bit larger than the left rear shock on LJ71 Bundera ( thats another thing i learnt, my land cruiser is a bundera, not sure if thats good or bad).

So there you have it, they are not the same. I have placed an order with ARB and the goods should be delivered some times next week.

In the meantime now I am researching a dual shock set up. I would not mind putting Ranchos as secondry shocks. Any expereince or help that you can impart will be much apprecaited.

The Bundeera is a SWB 2 dr only;) known as a LJ/RJ70

Difference between the left and right rear shock still does not make sense to me:confused:, is it the difference in valving due to vehicle weight distribution etc they are talking about or in the physical dimensions themselves.

Just curious ...why would you want a dual shock set up??

The shock physically larger in size.

I want dual shock set up cause i will be rallying in this vehicle and its good to have dual shock set up for this purpose. I had a dual shock set up on my land rover defender 110, and it worked remarkably well.

rosco, you mean 3 door right?

No, a 2 dr has two passenger doors. All the wagons have rear doors so you never count them. There is actually 4 drs or 6 drs if you count the rears

Ok, so i guess mine is a 2 door one.

Anyway what i'd love to see are pictures of some double shock suspension on any of these lj or bj models. I like to see how the secondry shocks are mounted.
