Guys,

Are electric hub better than manual ones? are they heavy duty? can they take a pounding?

If yes, then can i put them on my LJ?

Are they available in the US?

I had a land rover defender previously and it had full time 4 wheel drive, so i never had to worry about locking the hubs and all that.

I'll try to explain, LJ's with electric hubs have an ECU Box , this receives a signal from the speedo, if your doing more than 5Kph, the hubs won't enguage.
The front Spindle's [ stub axles ]and main wheel bearing hubs are completly differant to a none electric hub system.these conveys the power from the ECU Box , fitted in behind the dash to the electric motors that are fitted to the end of the Main hubs.
I could tell you more if your still interested, on this topic.

I'm in the process of hopefully going to manual locking hubs... Thought I might share a few photos and maybe show just how the system works.

Notice 4 studs to accommodate SMALL ELECTRIC MOTOR

Center of electric locking system FRONT SIDE showing small electric motor which turns the hub instead of the operator...

Backside of center of hub unit with constant pick-ups via two small spring loaded contacts on copper ring terminals (very dirty covered in grease)

Backsize of outer piece of hub. Notice small gears where electric motors meshes to move hub locking mechanism

Hi. the easiest way to convert to manual hublock from electric is to have a spacer. Or swap the spindle from hilux or cruiser then use the cruiser or hilux hub. And wala you just bolt the hublock.

Give John call at Radd Cruisers and get him to do a little picture tutorial of this install....:p

Spacers are a waste of time, they just shear off...And come loose when you least expect.
Been there , done that. And Yes they were pinned together not just relying on the bolts / studs.

I got some wheel hubs from an early 70 or was it 60 series....
Fitted on my "electric" stub axles.. I reused the factory wheel bearing nut.
Just need to reduce its thickness...
Works a treat....No issues to date and that was over 100k klms ago...

The electric hubs are just as strong as the manual hubs... Its just the electric operation that lets them down.

Old Blues mod to the electric ones is a good option....

well, i am not sure i will agree the spacers are a waste of time IF they are installed properly.
i had a set of John's spacers on my PZJ78, the previous owner did screw up the install which i blamed on the spacers in another post (unfair), these spacers stood up to 36" tractor tires, turbo'd and intercooled PZ with the R141 and a heavy foot. I had no issues with them. air time when winter wheeling, heavy throttle in mud and they gave me no concern.
a good product.

but

i still would rather go with the knuckle, spindle and assorted parts from a late modle 40, 70 or 60 for the conversion ... since i have them sitting on the shelf.

the actual electric hub mounting is MUCH stronger than the manual. the hub itself is just as strong. the wiring is fine ... it is usually the idiot that is working on the vehicle that fawks them up.
