ordered another batch of parts today. a check i've been waiting three weeks for finally showed, up tonight, so i'll order the rest to make her hopefully roadworthy monday. in the meantime, tonight consisted of me, a chisel, and some wire brushes. cleaned the front of the block of the thick crud and got the old school thermostat out of the upper housing so i could clean that up

Orange Fanblade rattlecan?

The boss is thinking that the fan blades should be orange...
So,
1) Did any fan blades get painted orange by the factory in 1962?
B) Disregarding correctness to year, what is the best rattlecan match to a factory orange fanblade? (modren "Safety Orange" looks hideous btw )

productive day...
while pighead rebuilt the carb for the blue pig, i cleaned and painted the radiator accessories, installed one of the hubs, scraped and cleaned the skidplate, and pulled and cleaned the front cover.

when he was done with the carb, he zipped all the bolts out of the oil pan and i bottle jacked it off.

it's been two weeks since we had her purring albeit for a few short spurts and with no oil getting to the top, so we really wanted to see what the bottom looked like. the pan has normal sludge, with no flecks of bearing, but some silvery powder from normalish wear. pighead thinks i'm being paranoid, but the end cylinders seem too dry, even for the little amount we ran it. the cam did have oil droplets on every lobe and the middle cylinders were wet. the end of the crank on each end was dry as were the two end piston bottoms. the walls look good

the pan is soaking now, but looking a heck of a lot better

i did notice a weird notching on the oil pan...is this normal?

I would have rather had the big pipe as well. Bummer toyota only used it for a couples of years. :frown:

another productive day.

after a lot of scrubbing, followed by a lot of scrubbing, followed by some pick action, and finally some more scrubbing, the oil pan is down to metal again. gasket is officially off.

from there, it was an afternoon under the rig with the scraper, a pick, a flat head screwdriver and a wire brush, so i could, surprise!, scrub some more.

then we pushed her out into the driveway to scrub while rinsing and so i could clean the floor and the cardboard that was under her and replace with fresh cardboard,

that was followed by soaking and scrubbing the lower flywheel cover (i didnt' take off the front one, probably should, quite frankly, i'm sick of scrubbing)

oil filter cover and front cover got painted, and a new seal in the front cover. oil filter housing got drained. skid plate is painted, fan blade is a nice orange. oh, and did i mention, she got scrubbed up today.....

Yes the notching is normal.

Really enjoying watching this ole girl come back to life, keep up the good work:beer:

thanks! we're enjoying it too. even the scrubbing part;) knowing that we'll be assembling soon is making it even more exciting. now i've got people at work hounding me on when stuff will be done. my upholstery guy bugged me this morning on getting the jump seats to him. wooohoooo!!!!

not much to report. parts are starting to roll in, including these sexy new door straps from d'animal to replace the rotten ones that i can tear into chunks. two more parts orders should be here before the weekend comes. hopefully soon, we'll be able to start posting part numbers of what we used for all the other early 40 owners benefit.

i'm still spending a few hours every evening cleaning, priming, painting, scrubbing, tearing apart stuff. block is almost cleaned up where the pan mounts, got distracted by tearing down the oil pressure regulator and making sure everything was moving nicely (and wire brushing it clean and coating it). parts are not getting a concourse d'elegance detailing, but at least some quicky cleanup and rattle can to protect them for a while. someday, she'll garner a true frame off, but not soon.

got oil pump out and tomorrow hopefully will check gears to ensure they're kosher, and clean the pickup. also cleaned up the garage a tad as it's getting to be a nightmare to maneuver in there.

pics to get everyone through the next couple of days;)

Not to add to your work, but you might want to consider changing out the fiber cam timing gear. Tend to fail, especially when nearing or exceeding the half century mark. :)

Flat weirdness...

So, i start taking apart this carb and pull out the float bowl float, and it looks like it's been crushed...

clutch is bled, just need to adjust now. new taillamp is installed, just need to wire. jumpseat and tailgate chain cover went to my upholsterer. big plans as far as working on her this weekend, but here's the pics for now. my upholstery guys car, bling taillamp, bling pedal pads...ok, not much, but every little bit of assembly is making it all seem better than the disassembly phase

also, anyone have a good shot of the relay plaque?

still have a lot of little things to do, but nothing major until i get a love package from cdan.

here you go, I'm enjoying your thread. It's good to see this truck coming back to life. I remember seeing pictures of it from the previous owner and thinking it seemed to be in great shape.
