Link Suspension Basics (1 Viewer)

This is the only section I have found talking about coil spring conversions so I thought I would post my basic questions here. I am reading through "Link suspensions for dummies" and "The God of Suspension" on pirate. People mention the milken book. Anyone know the title, author, etc. so I can get this book? Is it a good book to read? What other books or websites are good places to start researching linked suspensions?

It's likely a great book, but I'm unsure it applies to the variabilities we encounter in the offroad scene.

The link calculator and a lot of online reading will likely get you further....I studied about a year prior to doing my rear 4-link setup, and am VERY pleased with it's performance offroad.

The biggest building guide I received was "build what fits"....if you are keeping a stock frame and some stock components, then you simply can't do certain things with the links....

All of mine are 39" eye to eye and use 3/4 thread-5/8 bore QA-1 heims...uppers meet at the center of the diff and inside the frame, lowers are below the frame and splayed to the outer edges of the rear axle.

In addition to Woody's "build what fits" advice, I would also suggest that you look at a lot of rigs and watch how they perform in the terrain that you drive in. Copy what works well.

A few things I've learned on my own setup:
- wider than stock FJ axles are *best
- keep your lower link frame mounts ABOVE or parallel to the frame.
- header/ exhaust problems if using the LC straight 6 for front inner frame link mounts, not sure about V8's
- stretched wheelbase will provide *better link angularity
- biggest headscratcher for me was using coils or coilovers ($$$)
- have more than a general idea of where you will mount the trac bar. Don't let that be the last part of your design & make it adjustable.
