Thanks for all the input about the LJ73 for sale.

I went to see it. I should have been tipped off that the dealer was in the cheap sleezy dealer area. Where all the vehicles are in "mint"... I mean "Showroom Condition".

I drove out of my way to this place anticipating a nice clean truck. Like I said I can handle near mint or surface rust. It all boils down to money.

The cruiser was rusting from the rocker seams and there was a bad bondo job in front of both rear wheels  . It had been painted, poorly, recently and there was over spray on everything (door jambs, inner wheel liner, and trim). This truck was no where near show room condition. I didn't bother to drive it after I saw coil springs.

Yeah...at least you were able to go see it before putting any money down and run like hell when you saw what kind of POS it was.

I would think that you want a BJ74 with a 13BT to wheel anyway, not a 2LT...especially if you are going to build it up. You can add Wayne's PI and crank up to boost a little on a 13BT and the possibilities are better than in a 2LT.

Wondering when the HZJ73 are going to start showing up...now there's a wheeling platform with possiblities. :D

Enlighten me, what is special about the HJZ-73/4? It looks real nice from the pics.

Is it a 70's chassis with the HJ 6 cylinder diesel engine?

Were these sold in Japan and/or Europe?

My mouth is watering already. I'd like to get a HDJ80, but I'm finding that they're too expensive and to big for my wheeling style. My Lex does a good job as a DD weekend warrior, but I got too used to the Samurai's I used to own.

What's special about them? For me, it would be the same nimble medium wheelbase as my BJ74, but with a smooth-running powerful inline 6 1HZ. It would be a neat combination indeed.

Here's a question...what's the difference between the HZJ73 and the HZJ74? The two pics on that website that TB put up (pretty neat) looks the same. ?

i have done quite a bit of research on both and as far as i can tell there is no difference.
the HZJ73 was built from aug of 89 till aug of 99 and the HZJ74 was built from aug of 99 till june of 2000...
so says the figures anyway...
untill i find a ultra clean low km one i will be waiting.

cheers

I thought the HJ74 was coil sprung front, the same as 78-79 series

Give the man a cigar

The HZJ74 is still in production BTW.

What is so special about the 1HZ engine? It's a Northern American engine whose parts can be bought at Toyota, and it is a current production engine whose supply pipeline is going to stay open for a long time to come.

It's probably already been said, but...
Being an LJ, it's got the lighter duty pick up drivetrain with coil springs rather than the heavier drivetrain and leafs.
Edit: saw the other post, it's already been said.

Wayne,

Nice truck, but if I'm reading the translation correctly you'll have to wait for another 4 years before you can legally import even into Canada (manufactured in Heisei 6 and this year is Heisei 17).

Unless you have a trade secret. :D

Mot

yes, 06 so another 4 years for sure... i just wish they would post the serial numbers...
that unit reminds me of a living room i saw once, all covered in plastic and you were not allowed to even go into the room....

I actually used to think the 74 was a turbo but that should be a HDJ 74?

One thing odd about the HZJ74 series and the HZJ78/79 series is that the 74 didnt get the 50mm wider cab that the 78/79 series did.

Talking to my mechanic the other day and he says he can definately import HZJ73 and HZJ77 this year :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

The only turbo 6 cylinder diesel in the 7x series was the HDJ78/79, even then they are Australian market only. (So consider yourself lucky, Ross, you can buy an HDJ78/79. The rest of us will have to make one :) ) All the HDJ74's you see on the internet are conversions.

DOTARS's site says that anything 15 years old and over are eligible for import to Oz without restrictions. But you guys also get to import even newer ones as long as you have personally used it for 12 months and that the vehicle meets Australian Design Rules:

Yes,and even better I can be my own importer as long as I provide some ID and a cert photo AND $50 BUCKS:D
