they are similar to the headlamps on the leaked facelifted LC

considering the top of the range prado and lexus GX460 have HID lights , it would make sense the new 200 and lx 570 will aso come equipped with HID lights.

They why on earth did they not give the 570 HID? Such a weird logic to have LR and every other premium car company offer HIDs, and Toyota keeps using that lame excuse "it's too dangerous for other drivers..."

After reviewing the profile of the new headlamps, it appears that the front will indeed include a new fascia. Interesting...would like to see the interior now.

I agree there should be HIDs. However, I thought part of their reasoning was fixing replacing Xenons is too difficult in the bush. Most new Pajero's also still have halogen bulbs for this reason, as do Defenders that may be packaging.

The second pic gives it away "Max 30,000V May cause injury, burns or Death."
And in the aluminium housing it says D4R D4S 35W. My guess is that's the ballast.

That is HID.

It is. It's a quite common ballast found in most Infiniti, Toyota, Lexus, Nissan. It's a great ballast. Now, I wonder who's projector Toyota chose. That will be the real deal breaker.

I know these are spy photos...but do we think they will be a simple replacement for earlier models?

Headlamps? Probably.

Looks like they swapped a few connections and sockets. I haven't looked at a 200 headlight but that looks quite a bit more complicated than a standard halogen reflector with some bulbs in it.

If it is plug-and-play, I don't think it will work. There will likely be some issue with voltage. Don't you think?

Yes, you are correct. The halogen harness most likely will not provide enough power to ignite the ballast. You would have to use a relay harness that pulls from the battery and goes through the internal ballast, which Toyota generally will let you, but don't quote me on that. I'm not sure what the ballast connectors look like on the harness side.

Yes, as posted above, this photo shows a HID ballast mounted on the housing. These ballasts are very nice, and very common. I can get a picture of the ballast when I get back to the shop Friday. I attached 2 photos, the above photo showing the Landcruiser ballast, and another internally mounted Toyota ballast.

I doubt these will be plug n' play bc federal rules require OEMs with HIDs to be self-leveling.

As for reliability, I don't see them any more or less than standard halogen bulbs. If it goes out, you swap out the bulb, and a properly designed housing will keep the ballast and all electronics protected. I could see a problem with the auto-leveling hindering vision as they are designed for road use, but I speculate as I have no first hand experience with taking a RR off the paved path for extensive offroad use.
