I am by no means a seasoned Ham operator. I did it as a necessity to go along with my shortwave listening. Also few good friends are Amateur Radio Operators. I currently only have V/Uhf in the tacoma, no need for HF, YET. At home i have a 160m wire and a multi band vertical for 40m and higher. I also operated Vhf in the house (/me rolls eyes) 2m is not one of my fav bands to op, but i have a hand full of locals i talk to. I may be a Ham Operator, but i did it to have some comm when the grid goes down and i also love to DX when i have time. 10 watts to New Zealand 57 and 100 watt 59. Ham radio got me MORE interested into electronics. But then i have a minor in aviation electronics... enough BS from me yall have a good one have to do some antenna work of my own this weekend...

Looks like the majority of the group that went out on Saturday were operating HAMs. This was at OTMT. Erik and I did our own thing with FRS, but when we returned, Marshall was smoking pork butts and monitoring the trail ride on his BaoFeng. I will be taking a HAM class all day this Saturday and Sunday and sitting for the exam on Sunday. Hopefully I pass and get in to HAM a little more. I think it irritated Brian at Logan's Run, last year, that I was carrying a HAM but not licensed to operate it. He had a legit point though...

The grumpy HAM operator stereotype seems to be alive and well; don't dare go to the ExPo forums and mention you carry a ham without a license. Those guys really lose their minds over it.

Good luck at the class!

Thanks, Kyle! I'm half tempted to go to the forums now just to troll a bit...

I've heard as long as you are in a group with someone who is licensed that you can technically transmit under their "supervision". I need to get my license too.

Installed my iPad on a ram mount this weekend. It's paired with a Delorme InReach so I can navigate using MotionX. I took it for a test run last night and it worked great. Headlights and harness were a worthy upgrade as well, though I need to adjust the aim of the highbeams some.

I'm not sure if that's true or not... You have to identify every 10 minutes (and at the end of the transmission) so hypothetically, 2 folks would be transmitting with the same callsign. Anyhow, I just took the test and it wasn't bad. Just read the questions in the study pack and you should be good to go. My info should arrive next week, so I'm pretty excited.

ID every 10 minutes.... man that would get annoying on a trail ride. So are there different rules for simplex use vs hitting repeaters?

I don't think the rules are different because the FCC only cares what frequency you are transmitting on. Simplex on a 2M wavelength or hitting repeaters on a 2M wavelength... Same rules apply because the wavelength is what the FCC is concerned about. Of course I could be wrong!

Ordered a 6" lift kit for the 80 from Marshall earlier today. Not entirely sure what size tires to get... @forrest5000 has first right of refusal on my OME 2.5" lift kit. It's about a year old and is in good shape. I'm hoping he and I can just trade front control arms so I don't have to press out the caster correction bushings... Anyhow, deciding between 35's and 37's.

go ahead and get the 37's...so you wont wonder about it later.
The difference between 35's and 37's is huge...JFZ80 runs 37's on his 80 and it looks right.
when do you want to install it??
what about the exhaust, is that fixed already??

Depends on when it arrives... I'm not sure where Marshall's supplier is. Exhaust is not done, but I don't want to lock up your lift! The Y-pipe should be easy for MasterBend and I don't think it will set me back too much to have them do it. This MagnaFlow should be much better than the POS aftermarket that is currently installed. Dad told me it is the cheapest that Midas had. EMS?

I was leaning toward 37's, but noticed you are running 35's?

Edit: if you're still good with swapping out the suspensions at a HAMOM, that would be awesome! I feel like I've taken over the Benke lift though...

not at all...lets do it.
set a date, after Logans Run, though.
I am running 35's. You pretty much have to do what Johnny has done to moonshine to fit 37's on a 60 series.
I didn'd want to do that.
Besides, they were a raffle prize...almost free.

My Sig line says it all....38.75 and never look back....

Are you guys still having the boil ?don't seem to see a thread about it.

The calendar Schedule for 2015 proposed Oct 2-4th. Im not sure if anyone has done anything to 'set it up' - but Ive heard chatter about it. We need to commit to doing it, or resched or .... nix it. I'd really like to see it happen, and participate. I can help, and will help alot, but I am not familiar enough with cooking a boil to lead it.

I don't think I'll be much help with this event... I don't know about preparing boils, don't know the area, and will be out of town leading up to and during the event... :(

I'm 50/50 on making it, but I should know by next week if I'll have a conflict. Otherwise, I'll be there and will be glad to help. Lowcountry boil (or Frogmore Stew if you're from Beaufort) is pretty easy, all you need is a turkey fryer.
