hi, my 21 yr old son has a 2000 high mile lc up in dc and needs to get some brake work done and an honest estimate for work needed. can anyone recommend a shop, mechanic or dealer for the work? thanks, phil

second and third that

thanks, we'll look into ipor, any other thoughts closer to home. he lives between old town and braddock train station. appreciate any ideas.

i returned you email, hit me up if you need anything more.

Not sure whats the point to post a list to this question, if none of them are in Nova.

Well since I don't live in Virgina, I don't know how close any of them are- Rookie :flipoff2:

Just trying to be a courteous bastard.

I have all of my landcruiser work done at IPOR. They have the knowledge to provide you with the right diagnosis the first time around, and while they aren't cheap, their work is always done well and will not need to be fixed by someone else later. The front axle of the 100 series trucks is complicated and there are a few other things to look at besides the rotors and calipers on that front end.

If it's a regular brake job and he is your son as in teen-to-college i'd suggest that he do it himself. Brakes are pretty much the same on every vehicle, assembly/disassembly is obvious (it's hard to get it wrong), and the tools needed are few and widely available.
He will get dirty hands but soap is cheap and it builds character!

If the son is cash strapped that's the cheap/practical path.
Alternately if convenience is prime and/or you suspect other problems (massive neglect/wierd electrical behavior) then Lindsay Lexus does good work. IPOR may be good but if they are in Fredericksburg that kills convenience as a motivator since you'll have to take two cars or spend the day or something.

I live in Reston now so i haven't been to Lindsay in a while but they are better than Pohanka. Don't know much about the Toyota places except to say that Koons Tysons is/was rude and has laughably high parts prices vs online.

I haven't done the LX brakes yet (still fine) but have done Mazda, Nissan, Chevy, Ford, Porsche, and Range Rover brakes...both drum and disc...and have never been surprised.

If he's really in a bind he can use my driveway next weekend; i should have all the tools. I'll be working on the honeydo list but i'll be around the house.

thanks to all who have replied, yes he's in college and not very mechanical. plus he uses it every day to get to school and he has finals over the next 7-10 days. he's a florida boy so stick him in a boat and he can rig a bait, freedive for lobster, throw a castnet or spear a fish but mechanically he's in pre school. might just have to send him to the local toyota shop down the road this time around. he had a local shop on first st look at it and they quoted 900 for brakes, new bearings and not sure what else, rotors? he's supposed to email me the work order. thanks again for the replies. ipor sounds great but thats a drive right now. i think he has lacrosse practice in manasses? which is close.

update, i ended up using ryan bascom (user name; belowdeckfab) from * * * * * * * * * * * * On The Road Again Mobile Mechanic - Home and have to let everyone know what a great job he did. he was extremely responsive with staying in touch, showing up on time and most importantly getting the job done for a lot less than all the other quotes i had (parts were priced right also). plus he came to us to do the work which is a big deal when you're broken down or have other commitments which makes it hard to get to a shop. it's going to be a no brainer to continue using him in the future as he knows these trucks and has proven his work to me. thanks again ryan and to all who responded.

I've got a really good friend that works out of a local mechanic shop in Vienna. He previously worked at Koons Toyota in Tysons. He knows Toyotas really well and he was the one that found my LC for me. He has worked on it for the past 4 years.
C&C Garage, 703-281-2525. The boss is named Scott and the mechanic is Ike.
They are reasonably priced and do really good work. They don't push items on you, only what you really need. They don't do a lot mods, but for "regular" mechanic work, they are excellent.

fjcowboy, yeah you're right, it is good to know about qualified guys like ryan at ontheroadagain. you're welcome

After rereading my message, I may have misspoke and could be taken the wrong way. I'm very happy you were able to find Ryan and the work he did exceeded your expectations. I only meant to add to the forum post by providing another mechanic in the area, if Ryan wasn't available or if the Vienna location worked out better for folks. I by no means was trying to take away from Ryan or his work, if I offended anyone I apologize.
